Daejeon Metropolitan City's Hanbat Library is set to launch an innovative career exploration initiative titled "Human Book Live World Reading" this May, directly engaging middle school students within the city as part of their free semester curriculum. This unique program transcends traditional career guidance by transforming accomplished professionals from diverse sectors into "Human Books"—living repositories of knowledge and experience ready to be "read" through direct interaction with eager young minds.

The "Human Book Live World Reading" program distinguishes itself by fostering a dynamic and personalized learning environment. Instead of passively absorbing information from conventional resources, students will have the invaluable opportunity to engage in direct dialogue with individuals who have carved successful paths in their respective fields. This direct interaction allows for nuanced understanding, personalized advice, and the exploration of the often-unseen realities of various professions.

The program's structure involves a collaborative partnership between Hanbat Library and local middle schools. Rather than students visiting the library, the Human Books will travel directly to the schools, ensuring maximum accessibility and participation for the target audience. This outreach approach underscores the library's commitment to actively supporting the educational and developmental needs of the city's youth.

The inaugural phase of the "Human Book Live World Reading" program in May boasts an impressive roster of four Human Books, each representing a distinct and engaging career path. These individuals will share their personal journeys, challenges overcome, key skills required, and the intrinsic rewards of their chosen professions:

Seo Jin-seok, Professional Dog Trainer: Mr. Seo will offer insights into the multifaceted world of animal care and training. Beyond basic obedience, he is expected to discuss the importance of understanding animal behavior, the dedication required for the profession, and the growing role of companion animals in modern society. He may also touch upon the educational pathways and certifications necessary to become a qualified dog trainer, potentially inspiring students with an affinity for animals.
Cheon Jeong-yeon, Acclaimed Webtoon Artist: In an era dominated by digital content, Ms. Cheon will provide a firsthand look into the creative and technical aspects of webtoon creation. Her session is anticipated to cover the entire process, from conceptualization and storytelling to drawing techniques, digital tools, and the realities of the online publishing landscape. She may also discuss the evolving nature of digital comics and the opportunities available for aspiring artists in this dynamic field.
Jeong Seong-geun, Experienced Game Developer: For students fascinated by the interactive world of video games, Mr. Jeong's presence offers a unique opportunity to delve into the intricacies of game development. His expertise likely spans various aspects of the process, including programming, game design principles, narrative development, and the collaborative nature of the industry. He may also shed light on the educational backgrounds and skill sets that are highly valued in the competitive game development sector.
Jo Ye-eun, Independent Bookstore Owner: In an age of digital retailers, Ms. Jo represents the enduring charm and cultural significance of independent bookstores. Her session will likely explore the passion for literature that drives bookstore ownership, the challenges and rewards of curating a collection, and the vital role bookstores play in fostering community and a love of reading. She may also discuss the business aspects of running a small enterprise and the evolving landscape of the book industry.
Through these diverse narratives, Hanbat Library aims to provide teenagers with a broader understanding of the career landscape, dispelling potential misconceptions and offering realistic insights into various professional paths. The program is designed not only to inform but also to inspire, encouraging students to think critically about their interests, skills, and potential future careers. The emphasis on direct interaction allows students to ask questions, seek personalized advice, and connect with professionals on a more personal level, fostering a deeper understanding of the human element behind different professions.

Kim Hye-jeong, the Head of Hanbat Library, articulated the program's core objective, stating, "We sincerely hope that through this 'Human Book Live World Reading' program, our teenagers will be afforded a valuable opportunity to engage in meaningful and in-depth conversations with individuals who have rich experiences across a spectrum of fields. It is our aspiration that these interactions will empower them to cultivate a broader perspective and, ultimately, to chart their own unique and fulfilling career paths."

The "Human Book Live World Reading" program exemplifies Hanbat Library's proactive role in supporting the holistic development of Daejeon's youth. By connecting students with real-world professionals in an engaging and accessible format, the library is fostering crucial skills such as communication, critical thinking, and informed decision-making—essential tools for navigating the complexities of future career choices. This initiative promises to be a significant step in empowering the next generation of Daejeon's leaders and innovators.
