New Bicycle and Pedestrian Path Connecting Airport City, Sky Culture Center, and Sammok Port to Open

A new 1.6-kilometer "bicycle and pedestrian shared-use path" connecting the Airport New City (Unseo-dong) in Yeongjong Island, the Sky Culture Center, and Sammok Port will officially open on April 26th.

The Incheon International Airport Corporation (IIAC) announced on the 24th that it had completed a joint pre-opening safety inspection using bicycles with approximately 30 participants, two days ahead of the official opening of the path linking "Airport New City ↔ Sky Culture Center ↔ Sammok Port."

This bicycle and pedestrian shared-use path project aims to enhance connectivity with the Incheon Airport bicycle road and improve convenience for airport workers and residents of the Yeongjong and Yongyu areas. The project has been underway since 2024 and is now set to open.

The shared-use path extends 1.6 kilometers from the Sky Culture Center entrance road (terminus) to Sammok Port, allowing both cyclists and pedestrians to use it together without separation. However, motorcycle (two-wheeled vehicle) access is prohibited.

Previously, traveling from the Airport New City to Sammok Port required detouring along the Airport Dong-ro. However, with the opening of this new path, pedestrians and cyclists will be able to travel in a shorter amount of time without having to take a detour.

Furthermore, the improved accessibility to Sammok Port is expected to have a positive impact on tourism and the local economy in the Yeongjong and Yongyu areas, as well as in the Ongjin-gun islands such as Sindo, Sido, Modo, and Jangbongdo. Sammok Port serves as a key transportation hub for these islands, popular for their scenic beauty and recreational activities.

IIAC stated that even after the opening on April 26th, they will continue to conduct joint safety inspections and regular maintenance and safety checks to maintain a pleasant road environment.

Lee Hak-jae, President and CEO of Incheon International Airport Corporation, said, "We expect that the opening of this shared-use path will greatly enhance the convenience for local residents and tourists. We will continue to explore various ways to ensure mutual growth and development between Incheon Airport and the local community."

Additional Information:

Sky Culture Center: Located within Incheon International Airport, the Sky Culture Center offers various cultural experiences, including performances, exhibitions, and educational programs. It serves as a recreational and cultural hub for airport users and the local community.
Sammok Port: Situated on the eastern coast of Yeongjong Island, Sammok Port is a major ferry terminal connecting the mainland to the nearby islands of Sindo, Sido, and Modo. The port is also known for its fresh seafood and scenic coastal views, attracting tourists and locals alike. The area around the port features restaurants, shops, and accommodations.
Yeongjong and Yongyu Islands: These islands, now largely connected by land reclamation projects including the Incheon International Airport, are experiencing significant development. Beyond the airport, they offer beaches, resorts, and natural landscapes, making them popular destinations for leisure and tourism.
Ongjin-gun Islands (Sindo, Sido, Modo, Jangbongdo): These islands, accessible via ferry from Sammok Port, are characterized by their natural beauty, hiking trails, and tranquil environments. They offer a contrast to the bustling airport area and attract visitors seeking relaxation and outdoor activities.
The opening of this new bicycle and pedestrian path is a significant step towards improving infrastructure and connectivity in the Yeongjong Island region, benefiting both the local community and visitors by providing a safer and more convenient way to travel between key locations.
