Samcheok City is putting the finishing touches on its preparations for the "60th Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Citizens' Sports Festival," set to take place from June 12th to 16th. A preparatory status briefing held at Samcheok City Hall on May 28th served as an opportunity to review the overall progress of the event and strengthen cooperation among related organizations.

Comprehensive Review for a Successful Event

The briefing, chaired by Samcheok Vice Mayor Kim Kyung-gu, was attended by director-level officials, heads of each task force, and the heads of 12 eup, myeon, and dong offices. During the meeting, in-depth discussions were held on the current status of preparations and future schedules across all aspects of the festival, including venue inspections, accommodation and transportation plans for participating athletes and visitors, volunteer operation plans, and opening and closing ceremony preparations.

Samcheok City has put a special emphasis on improving sports facilities. The main stadium, Samcheok Sports Complex, along with other venues for each sport, have undergone repairs and inspections to ensure athletes can perform at their best. Safety is a top priority, with the installation of safety facilities both inside and outside the venues and simultaneous emergency preparedness drills.

Furthermore, considerable effort has been made to secure accommodation and establish transportation measures for the convenience of the numerous athletes and visitors. The city is maximizing the use of local accommodation facilities and is also exploring connections with nearby cities if necessary. Plans include encouraging the use of public transportation and operating shuttle buses at key points to provide ease of movement.

The Vital Role of Volunteers in a Successful Event

The role of volunteers is crucial for the successful operation of this Citizens' Sports Festival. Samcheok City has already recruited hundreds of volunteers and is providing systematic training. They will assist in various areas such as venue guidance, athlete support, interpretation, and medical assistance, contributing to the smooth running of the event. As the first faces encountered by visitors to Samcheok, volunteers are expected to enhance the city's image through their friendly and proactive service.

Preparations for the opening and closing ceremonies are also proceeding smoothly. A variety of performances and acts incorporating Samcheok's culture and unique characteristics are being prepared, promising a festival where all citizens of Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province can enjoy and unite. Particularly, the opening ceremony will feature special events that re-emphasize the meaning of the Citizens' Sports Festival, alongside the athletes' parade. The closing ceremony will announce the successful conclusion of the festival with a performance linking to the next host city.

Boosting Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province's Status and Revitalizing the Local Economy

Vice Mayor Kim Kyung-gu encouraged officials, urging them to "do their utmost in the remaining period through thorough preparation and close cooperation with related organizations to ensure a successful festival that satisfies all citizens." This Citizens' Sports Festival is expected to go beyond a simple sports event, solidifying Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province's new status and significantly contributing to regional economic revitalization.

During the festival period, athletes and visitors to Samcheok can experience Samcheok's stunning natural scenery and rich tourism resources in addition to watching the competitions. Major tourist attractions such as the Ocean Railbike, Hwanseongul Cave, and Jukseoru Pavilion will offer special attractions during the Citizens' Sports Festival, positively impacting the local economy. In particular, food stalls offering various local specialties and regional cultural experience programs will be arranged to provide enjoyable memories for visitors.

The Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Citizens' Sports Festival is a crucial event that promotes the health and harmony of citizens, as well as injecting vitality into the local community. Samcheok City aims to elevate its urban status and develop into a leading city encompassing sports and culture by successfully hosting this event. With all preparations proceeding smoothly, the 60th Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Citizens' Sports Festival is projected to be a successful celebration.
