Siheung City Boosts Local Economy and Seafood Consumption with Onnuri Gift Certificate Refund at Oido Market

Siheung, Gyeonggi Province – In a concerted effort to invigorate the local economy and encourage the consumption of high-quality domestic seafood, the city of Siheung has announced an enticing Onnuri Gift Certificate refund event at the popular Oido Traditional Seafood Market. Scheduled to run for five days, from May 9th to May 13th, this initiative aims to provide financial benefits to consumers while simultaneously supporting local fishmongers and the broader domestic fishing industry during the traditionally celebratory month of May, known as Family Month in South Korea.

The details of this consumer-friendly event, as outlined by city officials on May 8th, are designed to be straightforward and accessible. Shoppers who purchase domestic seafood from participating vendors within the vibrant Oido Traditional Seafood Market during the promotional period are eligible for a substantial refund, up to 30% of their total expenditure. This refund will be issued in the form of Onnuri Gift Certificates, a government-backed voucher system designed to promote spending at traditional markets and small businesses across South Korea. To claim their refund, consumers need only present their original purchase receipt and a valid form of identification, such as a national ID card or a mobile phone registered under their own name, at the designated refund booth located within the market. The refund booth will be operational daily throughout the event, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, providing ample opportunity for shoppers to claim their benefits.

The tiered refund structure offers tangible incentives for consumers to make larger purchases of domestic seafood. Specifically, shoppers spending between 34,000 Korean Won (approximately $25 USD) and just under 67,000 Korean Won (approximately $49 USD) will receive a 10,000 Korean Won (approximately $7 USD) Onnuri Gift Certificate as a refund. For those making purchases of 67,000 Korean Won or more, the refund increases to a 20,000 Korean Won (approximately $14 USD) Onnuri Gift Certificate. It is important to note that each individual is entitled to a maximum of 20,000 Korean Won in refunds throughout the entire five-day event.

The scope of eligible seafood products is broad, encompassing a wide array of domestically sourced catches. This includes not only fresh fish and shellfish but also processed seafood items such as salted fish and fermented seafood products, provided that at least 70% of the raw materials used in their production are of domestic origin. This inclusion recognizes the importance of the processed seafood sector within the local economy. However, certain categories of purchases are excluded from the refund program. These exclusions include seafood purchased at general restaurants located within or near the market, transactions made using the Zero Pay Fisheries Grand Sale mobile gift certificates (which are part of a separate promotional initiative), government-stockpiled seafood, and any imported seafood products. These exclusions ensure that the focus of the refund event remains firmly on supporting local fishermen and the consumption of domestically sourced marine products.

The Oido Traditional Seafood Market holds a significant place in the local community and attracts numerous visitors, both from within Siheung and from surrounding areas. Traditional markets like Oido are not just places to purchase goods; they are vibrant cultural hubs that contribute significantly to the social fabric and economic vitality of their regions. They often feature unique local products and offer a more personalized shopping experience compared to larger retail establishments. Supporting these markets helps to preserve local traditions, create employment opportunities, and ensure that the benefits of economic activity remain within the community.

The Onnuri Gift Certificate program itself plays a crucial role in bolstering these traditional markets. By providing consumers with vouchers that can only be used at participating traditional markets and small businesses, the government aims to redirect spending towards these vital sectors of the economy. This not only helps to increase sales for local vendors but also stimulates broader economic activity within the community. The use of these gift certificates encourages consumers to explore the diverse offerings of traditional markets, fostering a greater appreciation for local products and the unique atmosphere they provide.

Jeong Ho-gi, the Director of Siheung City's Economy Bureau, highlighted the opportune timing of the event, coinciding with the month of May, which is traditionally a period of increased family gatherings and celebrations in South Korea. He emphasized that this initiative presents an excellent opportunity for citizens to acquire fresh, high-quality domestic seafood at reduced prices while also benefiting from the additional financial incentive of the Onnuri Gift Certificate refunds. Director Jeong expressed his hope for significant public interest and a strong turnout at the Oido Traditional Seafood Market during the event.

This strategic initiative by Siheung City underscores the importance of local government support in promoting both economic growth and the consumption of healthy, domestically sourced food. By leveraging the popularity of the Oido Traditional Seafood Market and the effectiveness of the Onnuri Gift Certificate system, the city aims to create a win-win situation for both consumers and local businesses. The anticipated increase in foot traffic and sales at the market will provide a much-needed boost to local fishmongers, while the refunds will offer tangible savings for families looking to enjoy fresh seafood during their Family Month celebrations. This event serves as a positive example of how local initiatives can effectively stimulate the economy and support local communities.
