Samcheok City Provides Customized Comprehensive Consulting for Hanwoo Farms

SAMCHEOK, South Korea – The Samcheok City Agricultural Technology Center has implemented a tailored comprehensive consulting program to help stabilize the management foundation of Hanwoo (Korean native cattle) farms facing difficulties due to deteriorating economic conditions. This initiative comes at a crucial time, as Hanwoo farmers grapple with plummeting beef prices and escalating feed costs, posing significant threats to their livelihoods.

On June 17, in collaboration with the National Institute of Animal Science (NIAS) under the Rural Development Administration, the Center conducted expert consulting for a Hanwoo farm in Miro-myeon. The consultation focused on critical areas such as breeding improvement and feeding management, aiming to enhance the resilience and technological competitiveness of these farms.

Addressing the Challenges of Hanwoo Farming

The recent downturn in Hanwoo prices, coupled with a sharp increase in feed expenses, has placed immense financial strain on local farmers. The consulting program was specifically designed to alleviate these management burdens, foster self-sufficiency, and strengthen technical capabilities. Before the consulting sessions, a thorough technical demand survey was conducted to identify the specific challenges faced by individual farms. Based on these findings, a team of top-tier experts in various fields was assembled to provide customized solutions tailored to each farm's unique circumstances.

A participating Hanwoo farmer expressed gratitude, stating, "We've been experiencing significant management difficulties recently due to rising production costs. This consulting has been a great help, providing concrete advice on improving our management structure and offering technical solutions." The farmer extended thanks to both the National Institute of Animal Science and the Samcheok City Agricultural Technology Center for their invaluable support.

Long-Term Commitment to Agricultural Stability

A city official highlighted the long-standing commitment to supporting the livestock industry. "The regional customized consulting promoted by the National Institute of Animal Science has been operating for its 12th year this year," the official noted. "We anticipate it will significantly contribute to improving the technical capabilities and stabilizing the management of livestock farms, which are currently struggling with increased livestock product imports, rising feed costs, and supply-demand imbalances."

The National Institute of Animal Science (NIAS) plays a pivotal role in agricultural research and development in South Korea. Established to enhance the competitiveness of the nation's livestock industry, NIAS conducts extensive research in areas such as genetic improvement, animal nutrition, disease prevention, and sustainable livestock farming practices. Their expertise is crucial in developing innovative solutions and disseminating knowledge to farmers across the country.

The Samcheok City Agricultural Technology Center acts as a vital link between advanced agricultural research and local farming communities. It is responsible for disseminating new technologies, providing technical guidance, and implementing various support programs to improve agricultural productivity and profitability within the city. Their localized approach ensures that solutions are directly applicable to the specific conditions and needs of Samcheok's farmers.

The consulting program's focus on breeding improvement is particularly relevant given the emphasis on producing high-quality Hanwoo beef, which is highly prized in South Korea. Genetic selection and optimized breeding strategies can lead to healthier, more productive animals, ultimately improving profitability for farmers. Similarly, feeding management is critical for cost-efficiency and animal health. Experts advise on balanced diets, efficient feed utilization, and alternative feed sources to mitigate the impact of rising feed prices.

This ongoing support from governmental and research institutions is essential for the sustainability of South Korea's Hanwoo industry. As global trade dynamics and climate change continue to present new challenges, such comprehensive and tailored consulting services empower farmers to adapt, innovate, and maintain their competitiveness in a volatile market. The proactive measures taken by Samcheok City and NIAS serve as a model for fostering a resilient and prosperous agricultural sector.
