Seoul, South Korea – KT Corporation has announced a strategic partnership with Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) and Seoul National University to spearhead the development and implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) solutions specifically designed for the power industry. The MOU, signed on March 20, 2025, marks a significant step towards the digital transformation of South Korea's energy sector.

The collaboration will center on several key initiatives, including:

Developing and demonstrating AI solutions and security systems optimized for the power industry, leveraging a hybrid cloud infrastructure.
Exploring and developing innovative business models that integrate power and AI technologies.
Conducting joint research and development on core technologies in the power-AI domain.
Cultivating a skilled workforce in the power and AI sectors and supporting innovative startups.
A primary focus of the partnership is the development of AI solutions that utilize generative AI's learning and inference capabilities to revolutionize power systems. KT will play a crucial role in building a robust AI security framework that complies with government security standards, including network segregation for public institutions. By employing a hybrid cloud architecture, the partners aim to safeguard sensitive data through controlled access, encryption, and real-time monitoring.

KT plans to leverage its partnership with Microsoft to apply "Korean AI" technologies, tailored to domestic regulations and standards, to develop customized solutions for the power industry. The three organizations also intend to expand their collaboration to include ventures and startups, fostering the development of AI-specialized energy solution business models and pursuing joint ventures in overseas markets.

"We expect that the AX (AI Transformation) diffusion will be triggered in the public sector by concentrating the best capabilities of KT, Korea Electric Power Corporation, and Seoul National University," said Kim Young-shub, CEO of KT. "We will support the AX of the national power industry and establish ourselves as an accelerator that leads the acceleration of AX in other domestic industries."

Kim Dong-cheol, CEO of KEPCO, stated, "It is time to actively seek AI transformation and opportunities for future leaps in the entire energy ecosystem based on AI convergence technology. If these three organizations join forces through this agreement, the Korean power industry can establish itself as a 'first mover' in the global energy industry."
