In a move to alleviate the financial burden of physical activity and encourage greater public participation in sports, the South Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) will launch the ‘Sports Facility Usage Fee Income Deduction System’ on July 1st. This initiative will allow eligible individuals to claim income tax deductions for fees paid to registered fitness centers (gyms) and swimming pools.
Prior to the implementation, the MCST will conduct a series of ten regional information sessions across the country from April 26th to mid-May to guide business operators through the registration process.
The new system expands the scope of income tax deductions, which were previously limited to cultural sectors such as books, performances, museums, art galleries, and cinema tickets. Under this expansion, salaried workers with an annual income of 70 million KRW (approximately 52,000 USD) or less will be entitled to a 30% income tax deduction on their annual expenditure for registered fitness facilities and swimming pools, up to a maximum of 3 million KRW.
Business registration is mandatory for fitness centers and swimming pools to participate in the scheme. The MCST will accept registration applications until the end of June via the ‘Culture Expense Income Deduction’ website (culture.go.kr/deduction).
To ensure a smooth rollout and encourage widespread participation, the MCST and the Korea Culture Information Service are jointly organizing the explanatory sessions. The schedule includes: Seoul (April 26th, Samkyung Education Center), Suwon (Gyeonggi Province, April 27th), Wonju (Gangwon Province, April 28th), Daejeon (Chungcheong Province, April 30th), Busan (Gyeongsang Province, May 8th), and Gwangju (Jeolla Province, May 11th), with additional sessions planned for other regions.
Interested parties can pre-register for the information sessions through an online link or a QR code provided on promotional materials. The first 50 online registrants for each session will receive a coffee gift certificate, and on-site attendees will have the chance to win prizes through a raffle.
The MCST is also collaborating closely with relevant industry associations, including the Korea Fitness Center Owners Association and the Korea Swimming Pool Owners Association, to promote the new system. They will also utilize social media and online communities to actively encourage business participation.
A representative from the MCST emphasized the urgency for businesses to register by the end of June to ensure their users can benefit from the income deduction starting in July. "The government and private sector will work together to ease the financial burden of citizens' sports activities and ensure the early establishment of this system," the official stated.
This initiative is anticipated to not only boost participation in fitness activities but also provide financial relief to individuals committed to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The success of the program will depend on the active registration of eligible sports facilities and the awareness of the deduction benefits among the target demographic.
