Kookmin University's "Net-Zero" Club Champions Sustainability with Umbrella Sharing Program

Kookmin University is embracing the principles of a sharing economy with the launch of a new campus-wide umbrella sharing initiative led by the environmental club "Net-Zero," under the guidance of the Climate Change Response Project Team and Professor Kang Yoon-hee. Starting April 16th, this program not only offers a practical solution for unpredictable weather but also aims to cultivate a culture of sharing and environmental responsibility among students and faculty.

The initiative comes at a time when universities globally are increasingly focusing on sustainability and innovative solutions to promote resource efficiency. Sharing economy models, which emphasize the collaborative use of goods and services, are gaining traction as a way to reduce waste and foster a stronger sense of community.

Kookmin University's "Net-Zero" club has strategically placed easily accessible umbrella stands in ten heavily trafficked buildings across campus. These include Bukak Hall, the Science Building, the Business Administration Building, the Economics Building, Sungkok Library, the Engineering Building, the Future Hall, the Arts Building, the Design Building, and the Law Building. Each stand is equipped with a QR code that provides details about the program and its location, ensuring ease of use for the university community.

The program operates on a simple honor system: users can borrow an umbrella when needed and return it to any designated stand. This decentralized return system aims to maximize convenience and encourage widespread participation. To further engage the campus community and gather valuable feedback, the QR code also directs users to a voluntary survey focusing on environmental awareness and perceptions of the sharing economy. The data collected will contribute to Kookmin University's 2025 Sustainability Report, highlighting the impact of student-led environmental initiatives. Participants in the survey will also be entered into a draw to win prizes.

Bae Eun-kyung, president of the "Net-Zero" club and a student of Korean History, expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating, "We are optimistic that this initiative will be a successful and sustainable endeavor within Kookmin University, fostering a spirit of sharing and environmental consciousness. We encourage everyone to support and participate in the 'Net-Zero' club's umbrella sharing program."

The "Net-Zero" club is a key part of Kookmin University's broader commitment to addressing climate change and promoting sustainability. As an academic environmental organization, the club actively engages in research and campaigns related to ESG principles, carbon neutrality, and environmental stewardship. Their previous work includes analyzing sustainability reports and participating in national and international environmental forums. This umbrella sharing program represents a tangible step towards implementing sustainable practices on campus and serves as a model for student-led environmental action. Similar sharing economy initiatives have been implemented at other universities worldwide, demonstrating the potential for such programs to enhance campus life and promote environmental responsibility.

Kookmin University hopes that this initiative will not only provide a practical service but also inspire a greater awareness of the benefits of resource sharing and contribute to a more sustainable and community-oriented campus environment. The "Net-Zero" club's efforts underscore the vital role that student activism plays in driving positive change within the university and beyond.
