The Independence Hall of Korea (Director Kim Hyung-seok) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on May 23 with the Overseas Koreans Cooperation Center (Director Kim Young-geun) to foster the identity of overseas Koreans and revitalize their respective unique projects. This agreement is expected to be a significant opportunity to strengthen the Korean ethnic identity and pride of overseas Koreans worldwide in commemoration of the upcoming 80th anniversary of Liberation, and to diversify the cooperative relationship between the two organizations.

This agreement was pursued based on the successful collaboration experience of both organizations last year. In 2024, the Independence Hall confirmed the importance of historical education for overseas Koreans by providing its self-developed educational content to participants of the 'Next-Generation Overseas Koreans Homeland Invitation Training' hosted by the Overseas Koreans Cooperation Center. At that time, the educational content from the Independence Hall received an enthusiastic response from participants, suggesting the need for closer cooperation between the two organizations.

The core of the MOU is that the Independence Hall will expand the provision of historical education content to overseas Korean youth and young adults participating in the 'Next-Generation Overseas Koreans Homeland Invitation Training' program, which the Overseas Koreans Cooperation Center will run from June to August, more than in the previous year. This year, especially considering the historical significance of the 80th anniversary of Liberation, specially produced educational content will be provided. This content consists of videos and various hands-on activities focusing on the Taegukgi, the national symbol of the Republic of Korea, to help overseas Koreans understand Korean history and culture more easily and enjoyably. It focuses on recalling the spirit and meaning of the independence movement embedded in the Taegukgi and instilling pride as part of the Korean nation.

In addition, on-site education for participants directly visiting the Independence Hall will be strengthened. Participants will experience the vivid history of the Korean independence movement by touring the main exhibition halls of the Independence Hall. They will have the opportunity to directly experience the historical sites, following the noble sacrifices and struggles of independence activists. In particular, detailed explanations of outdoor exhibits, such as the exhibition park of the removed former Japanese Government-General of Korea building, will allow for a deeper understanding of the pain of history during the Japanese colonial period and the efforts of their ancestors to overcome it. This on-site education is expected to provide a powerful experience different from knowledge learned in classrooms, significantly contributing to overseas Korean youth and young adults solidifying their Korean identity.

An official from the Independence Hall commented on this agreement, stating, "It is very meaningful to be able to share the noble values of the Korean independence movement with overseas Korean youth and young adults through various exhibition materials of the Independence Hall as we celebrate the 80th anniversary of Liberation." The official also emphasized, "Through this MOU, we will continue to explore cooperation methods not only in educational projects for fostering the identity of overseas Koreans but also in various fields such as exhibitions, materials, and research, and will maintain close cooperation in the future." This demonstrates the Independence Hall's commitment to strengthening ties with overseas Korean communities and continuing the spirit of the independence movement from a long-term perspective, beyond simply expanding historical education for overseas Koreans.

The Overseas Koreans Cooperation Center also has high expectations for this agreement. An official from the Overseas Koreans Cooperation Center stated, "We are delighted to be able to provide more in-depth and experiential historical education to overseas Korean youth and young adults through cooperation with the Independence Hall," and "Especially at the important time of the 80th anniversary of Liberation, the educational content on the Taegukgi will greatly help overseas Koreans feel the Korean spirit and enhance their pride." The Overseas Koreans Cooperation Center is promoting various projects to foster Korean identity and strengthen solidarity among 7.5 million overseas Koreans worldwide, and cooperation with the Independence Hall is considered an important stepping stone to maximize the effectiveness of these projects.

This MOU goes beyond simple inter-organizational cooperation. It is a meaningful step that provides practical assistance to 7.5 million overseas Koreans in correctly understanding the history and culture of the Republic of Korea and fostering their pride as part of the Korean nation. Especially in the context of the rapid global transition to multicultural societies, establishing the identity of second and third-generation overseas Koreans is emerging as an even more critical task. This cooperation between the Independence Hall and the Overseas Koreans Cooperation Center is expected to meet these contemporary demands, greatly contributing to conveying the proud history of the Republic of Korea to future generations and solidifying the roots of the nation. It is hoped that through the continuous cooperation of both organizations, the overseas Korean community will be further revitalized, and the status of Koreans in the world will be further enhanced.
