Icon of Paraguayan Theater and Founder of Arlequín Teatro Passes Away at 84

ASUNCIÓN – A wave of sorrow has swept through the Paraguayan theater community. José Luis Ardissone, an icon of Paraguayan theater and the esteemed founder of Arlequín Teatro, has passed away at the age of 84. He died on Thursday, May 22, after several days of hospitalization due to complications following surgery.

His son, Pablo Ardissone, had earlier on Thursday morning announced his father's critical condition, requesting blood donations as his final moments approached. Pablo stated that "the surgery itself went well, but complications arose afterward." José Luis Ardissone was reportedly admitted to the intensive care unit on Tuesday, May 20.

A Life Dedicated to Theater: Ardissone's Legacy

Born on November 3, 1940, in Asunción, José Luis Ardissone Nunes was far more than just an actor and director. He was the founder and director of Arlequín Teatro, and he displayed exceptional talent across various fields as a stage designer, costume designer, writer, and architect, spearheading the development of Paraguayan theater.

His initial encounter with theater dates back to his childhood. He recounted in a past interview with Última Hora that he would accompany his parents to performances whenever Spanish Zarzuela theater companies visited Asunción. He recalled, "I didn't quite understand it then, but I just liked it," revealing a deep affection for theater from an early age.

Ardissone graced the stage in countless roles throughout his life. He mentioned that "the characters I played were always those with whom I felt some connection." Among his most memorable roles, he cited Alejandro Guanes in his self-written monologue 'Caserón de añejos tiempos' (Mansion of Ancient Times) and Willy Loman in 'La muerte de un viajante' (Death of a Salesman).

Arlequín Teatro and His Legacy in Paraguayan Theater

José Luis Ardissone founded Arlequín Teatro in 1982, and it has since become a symbol of Paraguayan theater and a central hub for arts and culture. Through this theater, he nurtured countless actors and directors and showcased a diverse range of productions, playing a decisive role in expanding the horizons of Paraguayan theater. Ardissone went beyond merely staging plays; he utilized theater to convey social messages, connect with the public, and made immense contributions to the development of Paraguayan culture.

His works often reflected Paraguay's history, society, and culture, deeply resonating with audiences. He garnered acclaim from both critics and the public for his innovative direction and subtle performances, receiving numerous awards in recognition of his contributions.

Tributes and Condolences Pour In

Upon the news of José Luis Ardissone's passing, a wave of mourning spread across the Paraguayan theater community and the broader cultural and arts sectors. Many fellow actors and directors have taken to social Media to pay tribute to him and leave messages commemorating his achievements. One theater insider expressed their sorrow, stating, "He was like a father figure to Paraguayan theater. His absence will be deeply felt."

Although José Luis Ardissone has departed, his artistic legacy and passionate dedication to theater will forever live on in the Paraguayan theater community. His works will continue to inspire and move audiences, and the seeds he sowed will continue to enrich the future of Paraguayan theater.
