José Luis Ardissone, an icon of Paraguayan theater and the esteemed founder of Arlequín Teatro, has passed away at the age of 84. He died on Thursday, May 22, after several days of hospitalization due to complications following surgery.
His son, Pablo Ardissone, had earlier on Thursday morning announced his father's critical condition, requesting blood donations as his final moments approached. Pablo stated that "the surgery itself went well, but complications arose afterward." José Luis Ardissone was reportedly admitted to the intensive care unit on Tuesday, May 20.
A Life Dedicated to Theater: Ardissone's Legacy
Born on November 3, 1940, in Asunción, José Luis Ardissone Nunes was far more than just an actor and director. He was the founder and director of Arlequín Teatro, and he displayed exceptional talent across various fields as a stage designer, costume designer, writer, and architect, spearheading the development of Paraguayan theater.
His initial encounter with theater dates back to his childhood. He recounted in a past interview with Última Hora that he would accompany his parents to performances whenever Spanish Zarzuela theater companies visited Asunción. He recalled, "I didn't quite understand it then, but I just liked it," revealing a deep affection for theater from an early age.
Ardissone graced the stage in countless roles throughout his life. He mentioned that "the characters I played were always those with whom I felt some connection." Among his most memorable roles, he cited Alejandro Guanes in his self-written monologue 'Caserón de añejos tiempos' (Mansion of Ancient Times) and Willy Loman in 'La muerte de un viajante' (Death of a Salesman).
