Arsenal Intensifies Pursuit of Lee Kang-in: PSG Sets Price Tag Amidst Player's Social Media Activity

The potential transfer of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) attacking midfielder Lee Kang-in (24) to Arsenal appears to be gaining significant traction. British media outlet The Sun reported on May 6th (Korean time) that Arsenal is actively pursuing the South Korean international.

The report stated, "Mikel Arteta showed interest in Lee Kang-in last January," and further elaborated on the involvement of Arsenal's new sporting director, stating, "Andria Berta, Arsenal's new sporting director, is working to build a squad for Lee Kang-in."

Interestingly, Berta's interest in Lee predates his move to Arsenal. The Sun noted, "Berta also showed interest in Lee two years ago when he was at Atletico Madrid. However, Lee moved to PSG at the time."

Crucially, the report also provided concrete details regarding the potential transfer fee. "PSG want to recoup the £18.7 million (approximately ₩34.5 billion) they paid to sign Lee. They will not accept offers below £17 million (approximately ₩31.4 billion)," the publication asserted.

The rationale behind PSG's willingness to part with the talented midfielder was also highlighted. The Sun pointed out Lee's diminished role in the Parisian club, stating, "Lee, who is in his second season at PSG, is not having a good time, falling behind in the competition for a starting spot. He did not feature in the first leg of the Champions League (UCL) quarter-final against Arsenal, and it seems unlikely he will play in the second leg."

Adding further fuel to the transfer speculation, the report claimed, "Lee, who has lost his place at PSG, has even been named on the club's release list."

Lee Kang-in's reduced playing time under manager Luis Enrique has been evident in the latter part of the season. Enrique has often preferred other attacking options such as Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Ousmane Dembélé, and Bradley Barcola. In midfield, the established trio of Fabián Ruiz, Vitinha, and João Neves has further limited Lee's opportunities.

Following a foot injury sustained during international duty with South Korea in March, Lee has struggled to regain a consistent place in the starting eleven. Despite recovering from the injury, he remained on the bench for four out of seven matches. In his most recent start against Strasbourg, he was substituted at halftime due to a left shin injury.

French publication L'Équipe also weighed in on the situation on May 3rd, reporting, "PSG have made a significant decision regarding Lee Kang-in ahead of the summer transfer window. They have decided to allow Lee's transfer." The report further stated, "The specific transfer fee is not yet known, but they will meet with interested teams after the end of the season to make a final decision."

Adding a layer of intrigue to the unfolding saga, Lee Kang-in himself has seemingly removed any mention of PSG from his social media profiles. On May 6th, eagle-eyed fans noticed that he had deleted "PSG" and the club's iconic red and blue circles from his Instagram biography.

This social media activity has naturally sparked considerable interest among fans, as Lee has previously made similar changes to his profiles prior to significant transfer announcements, most notably before his move from Mallorca to PSG in July 2023.

The possibility of Lee Kang-in making a move to the English Premier League (EPL) has been a recurring theme in recent transfer speculation. According to Mateo Moretto of Spanish outlet Relevo, Lee's agent reportedly visited England during the season to hold meetings with several EPL clubs.

In recent weeks, Arsenal and Manchester United have emerged as the frontrunners in the pursuit of the talented midfielder. Notably, reports suggest that both Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim have strongly urged their respective clubs to secure Lee's signature.

Meanwhile, PSG is scheduled to face Arsenal in the second leg of their 2024-2025 UEFA Champions League semi-final tie on May 8th (Korean time). The fitness of Lee Kang-in, who has reportedly rejoined team training after recovering from his left shin contusion, remains a point of interest for fans and pundits alike. Whether he will feature in this crucial encounter remains to be seen, but the ongoing transfer speculation undoubtedly adds another dimension to his current situation at the club.

The potential acquisition of Lee Kang-in would represent a significant coup for Arsenal, bolstering their attacking options and adding further creative flair to their midfield. Arteta's reported admiration for the player suggests that he sees Lee as a key component in his long-term plans for the club. Similarly, Manchester United's reported interest underscores the high regard in which Lee's talent is held within the Premier League.

However, the final decision will likely hinge on several factors, including the agreement of a transfer fee between the clubs, Lee Kang-in's personal preferences, and any potential competition from other interested parties. The coming weeks are expected to be crucial in determining the next chapter in Lee Kang-in's burgeoning career. His social media activity serves as a tantalizing hint that a move away from Paris Saint-Germain could be imminent, with Arsenal seemingly poised to win the race for his signature. The prospect of Lee Kang-in showcasing his talents in the Premier League is undoubtedly an exciting one for football fans worldwide.
