LOS ANGELES – After a prolonged slump, Hollywood's DC Studios has announced a splendid revival with the overwhelming box office success of the movie 'Superman'. Released on July 11th in 4,135 North American theaters, 'Superman' recorded $122 million (approximately ₩168.3 billion) in ticket sales in just three days since its opening, achieving the third-highest opening weekend for a film in North America this year. This marks the first time a DC Studios film has surpassed $100 million in its opening weekend in North America since 'Wonder Woman' in 2017, eight years ago, and is expected to inject new vitality into the stagnant DC Extended Universe (DCEU).
Quenching DC's Long-Standing Thirst
DC Studios has previously disappointed fans with a string of critical and commercial failures, including 'Justice League' (2017), 'Shazam!' (2019), 'The Flash' (2023), and 'Joker: Folie à Deux' (2024). Especially as the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) enjoyed continuous success, DC was criticized for its shortcomings in establishing a clear world-building and engaging storytelling. In this context, the success of 'Superman' signifies that DC Studios has finally quenched its long-standing thirst and reached a new turning point.
This 'Superman' garnered even more attention as it is the first project released since James Gunn, who successfully led Marvel Studios' 'Guardians of the Galaxy' series, took office as co-CEO of DC Studios. Furthermore, this film is the first work in the newly established DC universe, expected to play a crucial role in setting the direction for the future DC Universe (DCU). Director James Gunn previously stated in an interview that the new DCU would be named 'Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters,' and would build a unified narrative where each film and series is organically connected.
Comparison with Previous 'Superman' Films and Global Performance
The opening weekend North American gross for this 'Superman' did not reach the $166 million recorded by Zack Snyder's 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice' (2016). However, it achieved a similar level to 'Man of Steel' (2013), which grossed $117 million (unadjusted for inflation) and was produced by Christopher Nolan and starred Henry Cavill, proving its box office power. This suggests that the new 'Superman' has succeeded in attracting not only existing fans but also new audiences.
Warner Bros., which owns DC Studios, estimated 'Superman''s opening weekend worldwide box office gross at $217 million (approximately ₩299.4 billion). The film's production budget is reported to be around $225 million (approximately ₩310.4 billion), meaning it has nearly recouped its production costs in its opening weekend, raising expectations for reaching profitability.
Jeffrey Goldstein, Warner Bros.' head of domestic distribution, told The Associated Press that "'Superman' is a pretty big win for DC Studios," adding, "We haven't earned the fans' trust in a long time, and we clearly needed to take a step back and reinvent ourselves." His remarks show that DC Studios has acknowledged past failures and sought new changes.
Box Office Competition
At the North American box office last weekend, 'Superman' took a dominant first place, while Scarlett Johansson's 'Jurassic World: A New Beginning' (hereinafter 'Jurassic World 4') came in second, and Brad Pitt's 'F1 The Movie' ranked third. Notably, 'Jurassic World 4' saw its ticket sales drop by 57% compared to its opening weekend due to the arrival of 'Superman,' indicating it lost ground in the box office race.
The success of 'Superman' amplifies expectations for DC Studios' future endeavors. Following 'Superman,' Director James Gunn is slated to present various DCU projects, including a Batman film titled 'The Brave and the Bold,' and 'Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.' All eyes are on whether the success of this 'Superman' will be more than a one-off, serving as a springboard for the successful resurgence of the DCU.
