The Songpa Re-use Center: Emerging as a Hot Spot for "Practical Consumption" in an Era of High Prices

As the recent trend of high prices continues, consumers' wallets are getting thinner. In this situation, the Songpa Re-use Center is emerging as a new shopping destination among "practical consumers" who aim for reasonable spending. This center, which collects reusable second-hand items free of charge and sells them at low prices, has gone beyond being a simple used goods store to establish itself as a hub leading a sustainable resource circulation culture, garnering significant attention from local residents.

Songpa Re-use Center: Catching Both "Cost-Effectiveness" and "Value Consumption"

Since its expanded opening in 2021, the Songpa Re-use Center has grown into a core facility leading Songpa-gu's recycling culture. The spacious 743㎡ store meticulously displays approximately 5,000 diverse items, including used electronics, furniture, and household goods, attracting many visitors. Last year alone, the center achieved remarkable results, collecting 8,273 used items and selling 11,865, demonstrating its active operation and the high level of participation from local residents.

The greatest appeal of the Re-use Center is its affordable prices. Essential summer appliances like fans can be purchased for ₩20,000 to ₩50,000, and air conditioners for ₩200,000 to ₩400,000. Popular 5-tier storage units for kitchens and living rooms are available for ₩80,000 to ₩100,000. The ability to directly see, compare, and select from 17 types of home appliances such as refrigerators and washing machines, and 21 types of used furniture like dining tables and wardrobes, is a distinguishing advantage not easily experienced on online platforms.

Differentiated Services from Online Platforms: Adding Convenience and Trust

The Songpa Re-use Center doesn't just offer low prices. It provides convenience and trust to users through differentiated services compared to online second-hand trading platforms. Center staff directly visit homes to collect appliances and furniture that have resale value, and a delivery service is available for an additional fee if needed. Especially for large appliances, thorough inspections for defects are conducted before sale, and free service is provided for up to three months. If the cost of repair parts exceeds the purchase price, exchanges are also possible, helping consumers purchase used products with peace of mind. These policies significantly contribute to alleviating anxieties about second-hand transactions and increasing consumer satisfaction.

Furthermore, the Songpa Re-use Center operates a self-service tool experience workshop where residents can directly experience resource circulation. Residents can bring broken chairs, tables, or hangers and repair them using over 100 different parts. For those unfamiliar with repairs, center staff provide detailed guidance on repair methods and tool usage, making it easy for anyone to participate. The self-service tool experience workshop operates every first and third Wednesday of the month from 10 AM for one hour in the repair room within the Re-use Center. Songpa-gu residents can participate for free after making a phone reservation. However, some parts may incur an actual cost.

Spreading a Resource Circulation Culture: Songpa-gu's Efforts

Songpa-gu is encouraging residents to easily practice environmental protection in their daily lives through the Re-use Center. Seo Kang-seok, the head of Songpa-gu, emphasized, "The Re-use Center is the easiest way to protect the environment by repairing and sharing usable second-hand items. We will continue to promote various recycling activation policies to establish a sustainable resource circulation culture."

Indeed, Songpa-gu is taking the lead in environmental protection by promoting various resource circulation policies in addition to the Re-use Center. Through multi-faceted efforts such as free doorstep collection services for discarded home appliances, operating a separate waste collection day system, and promoting transparent plastic bottle separation, the district is encouraging residents' participation in resource circulation. These policies work in synergy with the Re-use Center, playing a crucial role in transforming Songpa-gu into an eco-friendly city.

The Songpa Re-use Center is a space that helps with smart consumption in an era of high prices while also enabling "ethical consumption" that contributes to environmental protection. By rediscovering the value of reusable items and repurposing resources on the verge of being discarded, this center is expected to play a vital role in creating a sustainable society for future generations. It is hoped that the Songpa Re-use Center will become even more active, providing many people with opportunities for practical consumption and environmental protection, and contributing to the spread of a resource circulation culture.
