CHEONAN, South Korea – Cheonan City today announced the signing of a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Air Products, a global leader in industrial gases, securing a $100 million (approximately 140 billion KRW) investment. This strategic agreement earmarks the investment for a site within the Cheonan 3rd General Industrial Complex, a move set to further establish Cheonan as a vital hub for the advanced semiconductor packaging industry.

The signing ceremony, held at the Chungnam Provincial Office, saw the attendance of key officials including Chungcheongnam-do Governor Kim Tae-heum, Cheonan Acting Mayor Kim Seok-pil, and representatives from Air Products. The collaboration underscores a mutual commitment to stimulating regional economic growth and advancing high-tech industries.

Air Products, headquartered in Pennsylvania, USA, operates across 50 countries worldwide and holds a prominent position as a leading global supplier of industrial gases. The company's existing Cheonan facility plays a critical role in the semiconductor ecosystem, providing ultra-high purity oxygen, nitrogen, and argon essential for semiconductor packaging processes. This demand has been significantly amplified by the expanding High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) market, a crucial component for next-generation AI and data processing technologies. The investment will enable Air Products to expand its capacity and further solidify its supply chain for these critical gases.

Cheonan City has pledged comprehensive administrative and financial support to facilitate Air Products' expansion, recognizing the investment's potential to transform the city into a leading center for semiconductor packaging. This includes streamlining regulatory processes and offering incentives to ensure a smooth and efficient development.

Acting Mayor Kim Seok-pil emphasized the profound impact of this investment, stating, "Air Products' investment will significantly contribute to the nurturing of our city's advanced semiconductor industry and the revitalization of the local economy." He further reiterated Cheonan's commitment to creating a symbiotic growth model, "We will continue to attract excellent companies and improve the investment environment, fostering a model where both businesses and the region prosper together."

The semiconductor industry, particularly in the realm of HBM, is experiencing exponential growth, driven by the surging demand for artificial intelligence, big data, and high-performance computing. South Korea, with its leading memory chip manufacturers like Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, is at the forefront of this technological wave. Samsung, for instance, has been actively expanding its packaging facilities in Cheonan and Onyang to boost HBM supply. Air Products' expanded presence in Cheonan will directly support these vital operations, ensuring a stable and high-quality supply of gases indispensable for advanced chip manufacturing. This investment not only reinforces Air Products' commitment to the Korean market but also solidifies Cheonan's strategic importance in the global semiconductor supply chain.
