San Luis Potosi, Mexico – Gongju City, South Korea, has once again demonstrated its prominence as a global learning city on the international stage. The city announced on April 16th its successful participation in the "Latin American Learning Cities Festival" held in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, from April 10th to 16th. During the event, Gongju actively engaged in exchanges with various learning cities from around the world, fostering collaboration and sharing best practices in lifelong learning.

The festival brought together 13 UNESCO learning cities within Mexico, alongside prominent South Korean municipalities including Gongju, Seoul's Eunpyeong-gu district, Suwon City, Yanggu County in Gangwon Province, and Buan County in North Jeolla Province. The participating cities focused on sharing their learning policies and strengthening mutual partnerships.

Gongju City garnered significant international attention by presenting its exemplary policies and initiatives as a lifelong learning city. Notably, the city formalized its commitment to sustainable international cooperation by signing Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with three key organizations: the Mexican Network of Learning Cities, the Latin American Alliance of Learning Cities, and the host city, San Luis Potosi.

Through these agreements, Gongju aims to share its successful learning programs globally and actively participate in expanding the global network of learning cities, promoting mutual growth through education.

A highlight of the festival was the "Special Seminar for the Korean Learning Cities Delegation," where Gongju Mayor Choi Won-cheol delivered a presentation. Mayor Choi shared Gongju's experience in operating customized lifelong learning programs tailored to the local context, as well as the city's financial investment strategies in this area. His presentation resonated strongly with the audience, showcasing Gongju's innovative approach to fostering a learning society.

Mayor Choi emphasized Gongju's dedication, stating, "Gongju City is committed to enhancing the quality of life for its citizens through learning and strengthening the city's sustainability. Based on the experiences and networks gained at this international event, we will further solidify our position as a global learning city."

The "Latin American Learning Cities Festival" serves as a crucial platform for cities within the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC) to connect, exchange ideas, and build partnerships. The UNESCO GNLC is an international network comprising cities that successfully promote lifelong learning throughout their communities. It supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by providing inspiration, know-how, and best practices. Member cities within the network share a vision of making lifelong learning a reality for all.

Gongju's active participation in this festival underscores its commitment to the principles of the UNESCO GNLC and its dedication to fostering a culture of lifelong learning. By forging these new international partnerships, Gongju is poised to further enrich its local learning ecosystem and contribute meaningfully to the global learning city movement. The city plans to continue its collaborative efforts with various nations, prioritizing the creation of a citizen-centered lifelong learning environment and the sharing of international values for sustained urban development.

This participation not only elevates Gongju's international standing but also provides valuable opportunities for the city to learn from other successful learning cities and adapt global best practices to its local context. The MOUs signed will facilitate concrete collaborations, such as joint projects, exchange programs for learners and educators, and the sharing of resources and expertise in lifelong learning initiatives. Gongju's proactive engagement in the Latin American Learning Cities Festival demonstrates its ongoing commitment to becoming a leading example of a global learning city.
