BARCELONA — Noemí Galera, the principal of the Spanish reality TV show "Operación Triunfo" (OT), has personally expressed her support for a boycott of the Eurovision Song Contest should Israel participate. Galera's comments have caused a stir in Spanish society, as they come at a time when a number of European countries, including the Netherlands, Ireland, Slovenia, and Iceland, have voiced their opposition to Israel's participation in the contest.
In an interview with the radio show "Aquí Catalunya," Galera emphasized, "I personally agree completely with this boycott." She questioned, "Some things are not acceptable. If Russia cannot participate, why can Israel?" She added, "I agree with [Spain] not participating in Eurovision if Israel participates."
Galera's statement comes after Spanish Culture Minister Ernest Urtasun requested that the state broadcaster RTVE "take all possible measures to ensure that Israel does not participate." Minister Urtasun argued, "All means of pressure should be on the table," urging Spain to join the boycott. However, the final decision on Eurovision participation rests with RTVE, which has maintained its position of waiting for the European Broadcasting Union's (EBU) final decision, expected by December.
'Operación Triunfo 2025' Season Kicks Off a New Beginning
Aside from the Eurovision controversy, Galera also expressed her excitement for the new season of "Operación Triunfo 2025." She stated, "I'm not superstitious at all, but I think it will do even better because it's the 13th season." She announced the start of a 13-week journey, leading up to the final on December 15. Galera confirmed that she has completed her preparations as the academy principal ahead of the show's premiere.
This season, the judging panel includes new members: Chris Leqateiro (Los40), Abraham Mateo, Guille Milkyway (La Casa Azul), and Leire Martínez. Galera praised them as "one of the best judging panels in the show's history," stating that they "perfectly understand what the industry wants."
When asked whether a new "Bisbal," "Aitana," or "Amaia" would emerge, Galera drew a clear line, saying, "That's not in our hands, but in the hands of the public and the industry." She emphasized to the contestants, "Appearing on OT does not guarantee international success," adding, "It just provides a more accessible opportunity to get into music."
Galera also voiced strong concerns about the malicious comments already starting online. She condemned them as "nonsense" and warned, "I will try not to respond this season, but I am prepared to sue some of the messages." Having previously sued for malicious comments, she said, "It makes me feel more at ease."
Will the 13th Season Capture Viewers' Hearts?
"Operación Triunfo 2025" aired its first episode at 10:00 PM on September 16. As with the last season, it can be watched live on Amazon Prime and the official YouTube channel. In the first episode, "Gala Cero," 16 finalists were selected, with two unfortunately eliminated.
This season is also expected to captivate viewers with its fierce competition and moving performances. Under Noemí Galera's leadership, all eyes are on what new stars OT will produce and what stories it will create.
