Google's 'Astra' AI Project to Debut on Samsung's Galaxy S25

Google is reportedly developing an advanced artificial intelligence (AI) assistant project called 'Astra', which is expected to be applied to Samsung Electronics' Galaxy S25 smartphone in the future. Astra aims to help people in their daily lives by conversing like humans, with visual and auditory functions that allow Gemini, Google's generative AI model, to see and hear.

According to the industry on the 16th, on the same day that Samsung Electronics unveiled the Galaxy S25 last month, Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, announced on his X (formerly Twitter) account that Astra would soon be introduced. CEO Hassabis announced, "Astra is our vision for a general-purpose AI assistant, and some features will soon be available on Android and Samsung Galaxy S25 through the Gemini app." He added, "We are excited to be working with Samsung Mobile and Android to introduce Astra's features for the first time, and more features will be added in the coming months."

Google Astra focuses on being able to answer video and audio questions in real time. Google has aimed to implement a real-time multimodal AI assistant that can figure out what things are, where they are placed, answer questions, and help with almost any task. For example, if you take a picture of a laundry label with your smartphone camera and ask, "How do I wash these clothes?" the AI assistant will verbally answer how to wash them. If you take a picture of a computer screen where you are coding, it will write the rest of the code for you. To do this, it is necessary to remember what you have seen and heard, understand the context of the conversation, and have a natural conversation in real time without delay. Google explained in a developer blog last year, "There has been amazing progress in developing AI systems that can understand multimodal information, but reducing the response time to a conversational level is a difficult engineering challenge."

Currently, Astra is undergoing testing on Android smartphones, and Google plans to apply Astra to various Google products, including the Gemini app and smart glasses. It is unclear when you will be able to experience Astra on a Samsung Galaxy phone. However, the industry 전망 is that it is highly likely to be installed within this year, as Hassabis directly mentioned the S25 released earlier this year.
