From Extractions to Preservation: Elevating Veterinary Dentistry for Companion Animals

Advancements in resin fillings and root canals expand treatment scope; cutting-edge techniques shared at the 12th Asian Veterinary Dental Forum

Veterinary dentistry is undergoing a significant paradigm shift—moving away from a primary reliance on tooth extractions toward preserving natural tooth function whenever possible. Modern techniques commonly used in human dentistry, such as composite resin restorations, root canal therapy, and advanced periodontal management, are increasingly being integrated into veterinary medicine.

On September 6, the Korean Veterinary Dental Society hosted the 12th Asian Veterinary Dental Forum at Seoul National University’s Schofield Hall. Veterinarians from both domestic and international backgrounds gathered to share clinical experiences, diagnostic strategies, and treatment approaches for periodontal diseases, traumatic dental injuries, and oral tumors in dogs and cats.

Unlike humans, companion animals struggle to clearly express dental pain. Pet owners must remain vigilant for subtle behavioral cues, such as chewing food on only one side of the mouth, persistent bad breath, or avoiding hard treats, which can indicate underlying oral disorders.

If periodontal disease progresses unchecked, it leads to the degradation of the gingiva and alveolar bone, while bacterial infections can eventually impact systemic health and vital organs. Experts emphasize that rather than attempting manual tartar removal at home, pet owners should consult veterinary professionals for pre-anesthetic screenings and dental radiography to determine an accurate treatment plan.

As dental technologies advance, transparent communication regarding treatment costs and clinical necessity becomes increasingly crucial. Veterinarians are advised to provide thorough pre-procedural guidance detailing the pros and cons of extractions versus conservative preservation treatments, anesthesia risks, expected costs, and comprehensive post-operative care.
