Korean Streamer Targeted in Racist Attack in France, Sparking Outrage

Toulouse, France - A distressing incident of racial abuse against a South Korean internet streamer has ignited widespread condemnation in France. Jinnytty, a popular Twitch streamer with over a million subscribers, was subjected to vile racist insults and threats while live-streaming on the streets of Toulouse, a city in southern France, on May 7th.

According to local French media outlets, including 3 Occitanie and BFM TV, Jinnytty was unexpectedly targeted by a white man as she traveled on a kick scooter during her broadcast. The man accosted her, shouting, "What are you filming? Dirty Chinese woman. Get out of here, you dirty whore (Qu'est-ce que tu filmes? Sale Chinoise. Dégage, sale pute)." He then reportedly struck the camera Jinnytty was using, causing it to fall, before leaving the scene.

Visibly shaken by the unprovoked hate crime, Jinnytty expressed her shock to her live audience, asking, "What just happened?" She clarified, "He wasn't a thief. He was just a crazy man. I was just filming my face, and I wasn't even filming him. This is a public place."

Despite urging from her viewers to report the incident to the police immediately, Jinnytty expressed reluctance, stating, "I don't think I'll get proper help even if I report it to the police." This response likely stems from past negative experiences abroad where language barriers and cultural differences hindered her ability to receive adequate assistance.

However, Jinnytty's hesitation has not stopped the online community from taking action. Outraged viewers swiftly shared the disturbing footage across various online platforms and social media, demanding that local authorities identify, arrest, and severely punish the perpetrator. Many emphasized that such hate crimes against foreign tourists tarnish France's national image and necessitate a strong response to prevent future occurrences.

The Toulouse city authorities were quick to address the incident. Émilion Esnault, the Deputy Mayor of Toulouse, issued an official statement expressing his full support for Jinnytty, who he said was subjected to "unacceptable behavior." He further asserted, "We must eradicate such injustices."

Nevertheless, concerns linger locally regarding the ability of law enforcement to identify and prosecute the man responsible. While French law includes provisions for punishing racist acts, difficulties in identifying perpetrators and securing evidence can pose challenges. The incident has also ignited discussions in the French media, such as a report by WhereistheBuzz, about the urgent need to enhance safety measures for foreign tourists visiting France, a country that attracts millions of visitors annually.

Jinnytty is known for her travel streams, where she explores different cultures, interacts with people worldwide, and shares her experiences with her viewers in real-time. Sadly, this is not her first encounter with crime abroad. In January 2023, she had her phone stolen while live-streaming in Buenos Aires, Argentina, though in that instance, bystanders helped apprehend the thief.

This racist attack in France is being viewed as more than just an assault on an individual; it highlights the persistent issue of xenophobia and racism. It is particularly jarring given the increasing global interest in K-pop and Korean culture, which has generally fostered a positive perception of Koreans in Europe, including France. There is a growing call within French society to raise awareness about racism and intensify efforts to create a safer and more inclusive environment. Simultaneously, voices are urging the South Korean government and its overseas missions to strengthen measures for the safety and protection of Korean nationals residing abroad.
