CHEONAN, SOUTH KOREA – Chungcheongnam-do Province is taking a proactive approach to youth engagement by entrusting young individuals with the primary responsibility of organizing its upcoming ‘2025 Peak Time Festival.’ The province officially inaugurated the National Youth Festival Planning Committee during an appointment ceremony and its inaugural meeting held on May 2nd at the Cheonan Civic Stadium grounds. This initiative underscores a growing recognition of the importance of incorporating youth perspectives in events designed for them.

The ceremony and first meeting brought together approximately 20 individuals, including dedicated officials from Chungcheongnam-do’s provincial government and the newly appointed members of the National Youth Festival Planning Committee. The agenda for the day encompassed the formal appointment of the committee members, a collaborative discussion centered on establishing the overarching direction and theme of the festival, and an on-site exploration of the Cheonan Civic Stadium, the designated venue for the highly anticipated event scheduled for September 19th.

Significantly, the 2025 National Youth Festival Planning Committee is composed of 16 active members representing youth networks from Chungcheongnam-do itself, as well as the neighboring metropolitan city of Daejeon and the special autonomous city of Sejong, along with North Chungcheong Province (Chungcheongbuk-do). This strategic inclusion of youth from diverse regional participation bodies aims to ensure a broad spectrum of opinions and ideas are considered throughout the planning process.

The core mandate of this youth-led planning committee is to empower the very demographic the festival intends to serve. By actively involving young people in all stages of event conceptualization and execution, the province seeks to create a festival that genuinely resonates with their interests, needs, and aspirations. The committee members will leverage their unique experiences and diverse skill sets to shape the festival's direction, curate engaging programs, and oversee the operation of various interactive booths and activities. This hands-on approach is anticipated to foster a sense of ownership and ensure the ‘2025 Peak Time Festival’ becomes a truly authentic and relevant experience for young attendees.

During the pivotal first meeting, the newly formed planning committee engaged in a dynamic brainstorming session, focusing on identifying a compelling theme that would capture the spirit and energy of contemporary youth. This collaborative dialogue laid the groundwork for future discussions concerning the specific programming and activities that will constitute the festival. Following the initial discussions, the committee members embarked on a comprehensive site visit to the Cheonan Civic Stadium area. This firsthand exploration of the venue allowed them to visualize the potential layout of the festival, assess the available infrastructure, and consider logistical aspects crucial for the successful execution of the event.

Nam Seong-yeon, the Director of Chungcheongnam-do Province’s Youth Policy Division, articulated the province’s commitment to this youth-centric approach, stating, “We are dedicated to working closely with these talented young individuals to craft a festival that not only entertains but also genuinely connects with and provides encouragement to the youth of today.” This sentiment reflects a broader trend in event planning that recognizes the invaluable contributions of involving target audiences in the creative and organizational processes.

The ‘2025 Peak Time Festival’ marks the third iteration of Chungcheongnam-do’s national youth festival, indicating the province’s ongoing commitment to providing platforms for youth engagement and cultural expression. By placing young people at the helm of this year’s festival planning, Chungcheongnam-do is setting a precedent for youth empowerment in regional development and cultural initiatives. This innovative approach not only promises a more relevant and engaging festival experience but also provides invaluable leadership and organizational opportunities for the young members of the planning committee, fostering civic engagement and community involvement among the youth population. The success of the ‘2025 Peak Time Festival’ could serve as a model for other regions seeking to authentically connect with and empower their youth demographics.
