Cheonan Sets Ambitious Carbon Neutrality Goal with New Basic Plan

CHEONAN, SOUTH KOREA – Cheonan City is taking significant strides towards a sustainable future with the formation of its second 2050 Carbon Neutrality Green Growth Committee and the establishment of a comprehensive basic plan. Announced on April 3rd, the plan outlines a clear pathway for the city to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030, based on 2018 levels, and ultimately achieve carbon neutrality by 2045.

The newly formed committee, comprising ten experts in the field of carbon neutrality, convened at Cheonan City Hall to finalize and approve the 2050 Carbon Neutrality Green Growth Basic Plan. This strategic document envisions "Cheonan as a sustainable eco-friendly green city leading carbon neutrality," aligning with South Korea's national emissions reduction targets while setting an even more ambitious timeline for achieving carbon neutrality.

The basic plan is grounded in a thorough understanding of public sentiment, incorporating the results of a policy preference survey involving 300 Cheonan citizens and 173 city officials. This participatory approach has led to the identification of 97 detailed action plans spanning six key sectors: buildings, roads and transportation, energy, industry, waste management, and carbon sinks.

Key initiatives within these sectors include:

Energy Transition: Robust support for the convergence and integration of new and renewable energy sources, aiming to decrease reliance on fossil fuels. This may involve incentives for solar power adoption, wind energy projects, and other clean energy technologies.
Sustainable Transportation: Expansion of eco-friendly transportation infrastructure, likely encompassing the development of electric vehicle charging networks, promotion of public transportation, and investment in cycling and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure.
Waste Management and Resource Efficiency: Streamlining waste recycling processes and enhancing energy recovery from waste, contributing to a circular economy and reducing landfill emissions.
Enhancing Carbon Sinks: Initiatives focused on expanding and preserving natural carbon absorbers such as forests and green spaces within the city. This could involve reforestation efforts and the creation of urban green corridors.
Building Efficiency: Measures to improve the energy efficiency of buildings through retrofitting programs and the promotion of green building standards for new constructions.
Industrial Decarbonization: Strategies to support local industries in adopting cleaner technologies and reducing their carbon footprint. This might involve providing resources and guidance for transitioning to more sustainable practices.
Cheonan City Mayor Park Sang-don emphasized the city's commitment to this ambitious undertaking, stating, "Based on the valuable opinions from the deliberation council and this well-defined basic plan, we are determined to accelerate our efforts in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and achieving a carbon-neutral future for Cheonan."

The city will now integrate feedback from the deliberation council and align the plan with broader national and South Chungcheong Province guidelines to finalize the comprehensive strategy. This proactive approach positions Cheonan as a leading municipality in South Korea's transition towards a greener and more sustainable society. The implementation of these 97 detailed action plans will be closely monitored to ensure the city remains on track to meet its ambitious 2030 and 2045 carbon neutrality targets.
