PAJU, GYEONGGI PROVINCE – Paju City is fostering vibrant connections between local farmers and residents while promoting the consumption of healthy regional produce with the launch of the "Sunshine Market" (햇빛장). This local food direct market will be held every first weekend from this month until November at the beautiful Haneul Madang (Sky Garden) within the Heyri Art Village in Tanhyeon-myeon.

The "Sunshine Market" offers a rich array of goods directly from the producers, including fresh and safe pesticide-free and organic agricultural products cultivated with care in Paju. Visitors can also find diverse processed agricultural products, beautiful horticultural crops, handcrafted items filled with dedication, books containing local stories, and unique experiential content. This direct transaction market aims to provide consumers with trustworthy and healthy food options while simultaneously contributing to the revitalization of the local economy.

This year's "Sunshine Market" is organized and operated by the agricultural corporation Peace Road Store (평화로가게), with active support from the Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation (aT) and Paju City. This collaborative effort between public institutions and the local community seeks to ensure the stable operation and continuous growth of the market, providing tangible benefits to both participating farmers and consumers.

Last year, the "Sunshine Market" garnered significant positive feedback from visitors by hosting various engaging experiential events for the whole family, such as making nuruk (fermentation starter) salt and delicious young radish kimchi. These events offered urban residents valuable opportunities to directly experience and understand agricultural culture, while also fostering familiarity with healthy food ingredients among children. Building on this success, this year's market promises an even more diverse and enriching array of content. The market will be open every first weekend from 11 AM to 5 PM, allowing citizens ample weekend time to visit.

The "Sunshine Market" kicked off its season with a special "Flower Market" theme on the first weekend of May (May 3rd and 4th). The event showcased fresh spring vegetables and wild greens brimming with the fragrance of spring, alongside beautiful flower seedlings and potted plants, captivating the attention of visitors. In particular, the "Flower Sushi Making" experience, which combined the enjoyment of food and flowers, proved to be a major hit, offering participants a unique delight. This highlights the organizers' efforts to transform the market into a more appealing space by providing diverse attractions and activities that go beyond simply selling agricultural products, leveraging the unique characteristics of the region.

Jang Heung-jung, head of the Paju Agricultural Technology Center, expressed his hopes that the "Sunshine Market" will serve as a valuable opportunity for citizens to directly experience Paju's abundant agriculture and diverse culture, and to share the value and significance of locally produced food. This reflects the expectation that the "Sunshine Market" will function not just as a direct agricultural product market but also as a vital link between urban and rural areas, fostering a sense of community.

Paju has a long history of producing various high-quality agricultural products thanks to its fertile soil and clean natural environment. In particular, agricultural products grown in the pristine areas adjacent to the DMZ are highly trusted by consumers for their safety and freshness. The "Sunshine Market" is expected to significantly contribute to the revitalization of the local economy by directly introducing these proud Paju agricultural products to urban consumers and providing stable sales channels for farmers.

Heyri Art Village, a complex cultural space where various artists' studios, galleries, museums, performance halls, cafes, and restaurants harmoniously blend, is a renowned landmark in Paju that attracts a constant stream of tourists throughout the year. Hosting the "Sunshine Market" within Heyri Art Village is expected to create a synergistic effect, promoting Paju's excellent agricultural products and culture not only to local residents but also to tourists visiting the art village. This unique combination of art and agriculture promises a more special and enriching experience for visitors, suggesting the potential for the "Sunshine Market" to evolve beyond a simple market into a new form of complex cultural space where culture and art intertwine.

Furthermore, with increasing public interest in health and the environment, consumer demand for local food is steadily rising. Local food, which bypasses long-distance transportation and distribution processes, boasts high freshness and contributes to reducing carbon emissions, positioning itself as an important choice for sustainable consumption. The "Sunshine Market" is expected to play a crucial role in encouraging healthy eating habits and promoting the sustainable development of local agriculture by providing consumers with safe and reliable local agricultural products at reasonable prices, aligning with these contemporary trends.

Paju City plans to continuously develop the "Sunshine Market" to contribute to increasing the income of local farmers, provide citizens with healthy and safe food, and expand opportunities for diverse cultural experiences. To achieve this, the city will actively communicate with local farmers to diversify the range of products sold and reflect consumer feedback to create an even more satisfying market. Additionally, by collaborating with local artists to develop diverse cultural performances and experiential programs, Paju aims to provide rich attractions and entertainment for all visitors, fostering the "Sunshine Market" as a representative cultural tourism destination of Paju.

In conclusion, the "Sunshine Market," held in Paju's Heyri Art Village, is expected to serve as a vital platform supporting healthy encounters between local farmers and citizens, contributing to local economic revitalization and cultural exchange. It is hoped that the "Sunshine Market" will continue to grow and develop, widely promoting Paju's proud agriculture and culture, and playing an even greater role in creating a healthy community where urban and rural areas thrive together.
