South Korea is witnessing a growing trend of young people pursuing certifications in the livestock industry. As of 2023, the number of individuals holding livestock-related certifications has reached 2,152, with a notable increase among individuals in their 20s, accounting for 39.9% of the total. This surge in interest suggests that young people are increasingly looking to these certifications as a pathway to employment in the agricultural sector.

A Range of Certifications

South Korea offers a variety of national certifications in the livestock industry, catering to different levels of expertise and career aspirations. These certifications include:

Livestock Technician: This foundational certification equips individuals with the basic knowledge and skills needed to raise livestock, such as cattle, pigs, chickens, and rabbits. Livestock technicians are responsible for the daily care and management of animals, as well as the production of livestock products like milk, meat, and eggs.

Livestock Industrial Engineer: This certification requires a deeper understanding of livestock science and technology. Industrial engineers are involved in more complex tasks, such as developing new livestock breeds through genetic engineering and creating innovative feed formulations.

Livestock Engineer: This is the highest-level certification in the livestock industry. Livestock engineers possess advanced knowledge and skills in livestock production, management, and research. They are often involved in developing new technologies and improving the efficiency of livestock farming.

Meat Processing Technician: This certification is specific to the meat processing industry. Meat processing technicians are responsible for the safe and hygienic handling of meat, including cutting, boning, and preparing meat products for consumption.

Why the Growing Interest?

Several factors contribute to the increasing popularity of livestock certifications among young people:

Employment opportunities: The agricultural sector, including livestock farming, offers a wide range of job opportunities.

Stable income: Livestock farming can provide a steady income, especially for those who are interested in a more self-sufficient lifestyle.
Contribution to society: Many young people are drawn to the livestock industry because of the opportunity to contribute to food security and sustainable agriculture.
A Bright Future for the Livestock Industry

The rise in interest in livestock certifications is a positive sign for the future of the South Korean agricultural sector. With a growing number of young people entering the field, the industry can expect to benefit from fresh perspectives and innovative ideas. As the demand for high-quality, locally produced food continues to grow, livestock farmers will play an increasingly important role in meeting these needs.
