Manny Pacquiao Hints at Possible Return After Philippine General Election

Manny Pacquiao (46), a hero to boxing fans worldwide and a national hero in the Philippines, has indicated he is considering a return to boxing after the Philippine general election on May 12th. Having achieved the unprecedented feat of winning titles in eight different weight classes, Pacquiao announced his retirement in 2021 but has since consistently received offers for a comeback.

Sean Gibbons, Pacquiao's advisor and head of his promotional company, stated in an interview with boxing publication "The Ring" on the 18th (local time), "After the May 12th election, if God wills that Manny begins his second term as a senator, he will decide whether to box again." Gibbons added, "I'd like to say more, but Manny is in a very tough election, and boxing is currently the last thing on his mind."

Pacquiao had pursued a match against 2024 WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios, but it did not materialize. Instead, he participated in an exhibition match against Rukiya Anpo last July, while Barrios drew with Abel Ramos in November.

Pacquiao is currently focusing on politics rather than boxing. He is running for a seat in the Philippine Senate and is dedicated to his election campaign leading up to the May 12th general election.

Gibbons assessed the potential fight with Barrios from last year as "a very winnable fight" and "a perfect fight for Pacquiao," mentioning, "Manny could fight until he's 50." Pacquiao's team had set January 31st as the deadline for the fight to occur, so he could focus on his Senate election campaign.

Pacquiao has not appeared in a professional fight since his decision loss to Yordenis Ugas in August 2021. His final professional record stands at 62 wins, 8 losses, 2 draws, and 39 knockouts.

Meanwhile, Pacquiao is set to be inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in June. This will be a significant moment celebrating his illustrious career.   

Pacquiao's Political Path and Return Possibilities

Pacquiao has been active not only as a successful boxer but also as a politician. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 2010 and to the Senate in 2016. He has worked to address poverty and improve education in the Philippines, particularly focusing on the development of his home region, Mindanao.   

If Pacquiao succeeds in his re-election in the upcoming general election, his political influence is expected to grow further. Simultaneously, his return to boxing becomes more likely. Pacquiao has experience balancing political activities and his boxing career. While he faced challenges balancing his responsibilities as a politician and his passion as an athlete, he achieved success in both fields.

If Pacquiao returns, there is great interest in who his opponent will be and what kind of matches he will have. In addition to Mario Barrios, whom Gibbons mentioned, fights against young and strong boxers are anticipated. Pacquiao's return would bring great joy to boxing fans worldwide, and his matches would attract significant attention.
