Gaza City, Palestine - The Baptist Hospital in Gaza City is teetering on the brink of collapse, overwhelmed by a surge of severely injured patients amidst the ongoing Israeli offensive.
Dr. Fadl Al-Naeem, the hospital director, painted a grim picture in an interview with Voice of Palestine Radio. He described a system buckling under the weight of critical shortages: medical supplies like gauze, sutures, and essential medications are dwindling rapidly, severely hampering treatment capabilities.
The situation is further exacerbated by a critical shortage of blood. Widespread anemia and malnutrition among the Gazan population have significantly reduced the number of eligible donors.
"We are facing a dire situation," Dr. Al-Naeem said. "Most patients arriving at the hospital have sustained severe injuries, requiring complex and immediate medical attention. Our resources are stretched thin, and the influx of casualties is overwhelming."
The hospital, like many others in Gaza, has been repeatedly targeted by Israeli airstrikes. The latest attack in late August 2024 resulted in numerous casualties among both staff and patients, further disrupting critical services.
"Many essential departments within the hospital are now non-operational," Dr. Al-Naeem lamented. "We are struggling to survive amidst the constant bombardment."
The situation mirrors a broader humanitarian crisis unfolding across Gaza.
"Shortages of critical supplies have reached such levels that we are now forced to turn away patients in some facilities," said Caroline Seguin, emergency coordinator for Doctors Without Borders in Gaza. "Restrictions and obstacles to the entry of aid by the Israeli authorities are severely hampering our ability to provide care."
Humanitarian organizations have been sounding the alarm for months about the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza. The current crisis, they warn, is a culmination of years of Israeli blockade and the devastating impact of repeated conflicts.
"We have now reached a tipping point," Ms. Seguin emphasized. "A massive and secure flow of aid is imperative to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe. In addition, an immediate and sustained ceasefire throughout Gaza is urgently needed to prevent further death, suffering, and societal collapse."
The toll of the ongoing conflict has been staggering. According to the latest figures from the Palestinian Health Ministry, at least 45,399 people, including a large number of women and children, have been killed since the escalation of violence on October 7, 2023. More than 107,940 others have been injured.
The international community is facing increasing pressure to intervene. Calls are growing for the immediate opening of border crossings to allow for the evacuation of critically injured patients and the delivery of much-needed humanitarian aid.
