The Uruguayan Athletics Confederation has confirmed that María Pía Fernández will represent Uruguay at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China, from March 21-23, 2024. Fernández will compete in the 1500 meters, where she holds the national record of 4:17.7, set at the 2023 World Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow, Scotland.

Since no Uruguayan athlete achieved direct qualification through ranking or minimum mark, the World Athletics universality quota was used to ensure representation from all countries at the event. Fernández was selected as her event, the 1500 meters, is eligible for this quota.

"It's a tremendous emotion," said Germán Barbas, the 17-year-old who was selected by Bielsa for the senior national team.

Valentín Soca, a distance runner who competed in the 1500 and 3000 meters with good results, declined to participate due to commitments with his university in the United States, California Baptist University.

Fernández, 30, has competed in two editions of the Olympic Games: Tokyo 2021 and Paris 2024, both in the 1500 meters outdoors.
