Mural Painting Volunteer Work at "House of Rodem": Connecting Hearts Beyond Spaces

Bucheon-si, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea – In the spirit of the May family month, students from the Department of Architecture and Interior Design at Chungnam Provincial University have brought a vibrant touch of warmth to their local community.

On the 14th of May, these dedicated students embarked on a meaningful volunteer activity at the "House of Rodem," a nursing facility located in Bibong-myeon, Cheongyang-gun. Their mission: to transform the facility's exterior walls into a blossoming canvas of spring flowers, intending to offer comfort and renewed vitality to the elderly residents with limited mobility.

The initiative was spearheaded by Lee Seung-il, a guiding professor within the Department of Architecture and Interior Design. Professor Lee has long championed the ethos of community contribution, regularly leading mural painting volunteer efforts for several years under the conviction of "I build my own community." This particular project was undertaken at the request of the Chungcheongnam-do Social Welfare Council.

Drawing upon their design expertise, the students meticulously planned and executed murals depicting sun-drenched blossoms and the refreshing imagery of nature across the facility's exterior. This artistic endeavor transcended mere aesthetic improvement, aiming to infuse the environment with positivity and cheer for the residents.

Adding a unique dimension to the project, students from the Department of Computer Engineering, along with Professor Lee Hae-in, also participated. This interdisciplinary collaboration underscored the spirit of unity and shared purpose, highlighting the potential for diverse academic fields to converge for community betterment. The mural painting was envisioned not just as an art project but as a means of forging stronger connections with the local community and conveying uplifting messages to its members.

The Department of Architecture and Interior Design at Chungnam Provincial University has established a commendable tradition of conducting bi-annual mural painting volunteer activities, taking place in the spring and fall within the Cheongyang region. Locations for these projects are often identified through requests from local public institutions such as volunteer centers and public health centers. The students take ownership of the entire process, from the initial design conceptualization to the final brushstroke, thereby gaining invaluable practical experience while simultaneously nurturing a strong sense of civic responsibility.

Expressing their sentiments, the students shared, "We feel a deep sense of fulfillment in being able to apply the skills and knowledge we've acquired in our major to benefit our local community. It may seem like a small change, but if it can bring even a little more joy to those who use this space each day, we couldn't be happier."

Professor Lee Seung-il lauded the students' proactive engagement in community care and beautification, stating, "The students' voluntary efforts to look after their community and enhance its beauty exemplify how universities can effectively engage in symbiotic relationships with their local areas. We are committed to actively supporting more volunteer activities through collaborations across various academic disciplines in the future."

This heartwarming initiative by the students of Chungnam Provincial University not only revitalized the physical appearance of the "House of Rodem" but also served as a powerful reminder of the positive impact that thoughtful community engagement and interdisciplinary cooperation can have on the lives of others. Their "warm touch blooming with spring flowers" has undoubtedly left an indelible mark on the hearts of the residents and the wider community.
