Early Summer Heat Waves Drive Surge in Convenience Store Sales at Coastal Locations

The summer peak season for the convenience store industry has arrived earlier than ever this year, driven by a combination of unseasonably early heat waves and the premature opening of beaches across South Korea. As temperatures climb and vacationers flock to the coast, retail outlets near major beaches are reporting a significant boost in sales, signaling an extended summer boom for the industry.

According to CU, one of Korea’s leading convenience store chains, sales at stores located near major beaches—including Haeundae in Busan, Gwangalli, Gangneung, Sokcho, Yangyang, and Boryeong—surged by 30.8% year-on-year during the period from June 13 to June 18. Industry analysts suggest that the early arrival of intense summer heat, coupled with the sequential opening of seaside destinations, has front-loaded demand for summer-related products. In some coastal areas, current sales figures have already reached levels typically seen in mid-July.

Sharp Growth in Beverage and Vacation Supplies

The growth in sales is most pronounced in the beverage sector. As temperatures soar, consumers are reaching for refreshing options at an unprecedented rate. Compared to the same period last year, sales of tea beverages rose by 58.0%, followed by iced drinks (54.2%), bottled water (51.2%), and carbonated drinks (50.1%).

Vacation-related non-food items also saw a dramatic spike. With more people engaging in outdoor recreation, sales of beach mats skyrocketed by 270.5%, while demand for inflatable swim tubes grew by 150%.

The shift in convenience store offerings, which now include a wider range of lifestyle and recreational products, has successfully captured this seasonal demand. Sales of sun care products increased by 45.9%, and seasonal summer clothing saw a 33.7% boost. Perhaps most notably, camping gear recorded a massive surge of 408.3%, reflecting the growing trend of outdoor leisure activities. Fresh food items, including processed meats (+46.0%) and fruits/vegetables (+43.9%), also saw healthy growth as visitors sought convenient options for their trips.

Expanding the ‘K-Convenience’ Experience for Tourists

The strategic evolution of convenience stores is also playing a role in this success. Beyond basic necessities, these stores are increasingly becoming hubs for tourists, including a growing number of international visitors who are keen to experience the unique culture of Korean convenience stores.

“We have observed that our coastal locations are increasingly attracting foreign tourists,” a spokesperson for CU stated. “In response, we are actively expanding our selection of products that represent ‘K-Convenience,’ including our popular desserts, various ramen products, and convenient ready-to-eat meals.”

As the summer season continues, the retail industry expects this trend of robust demand in coastal areas to persist. By aligning their product strategies with the needs of both domestic vacationers and international tourists, convenience stores are solidifying their position as essential service points that define the modern Korean summer experience.
