Guangzhou, China – Tourism Malaysia has reignited its efforts to attract Chinese tourists with a landmark consumer event in Guangzhou, marking its first major on-the-ground promotion since the COVID-19 pandemic. The event, held at the bustling TeeMall (Tianhe City Shopping Centre) on March 8th, served as a launchpad for the Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) Promotion Campaign, aiming to draw a record 7 million Chinese visitors by 2026.

Spearheaded by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, the initiative underscores China’s pivotal role in Malaysia’s tourism sector. Samuel Lee, Deputy Director General (Promotion II) of Tourism Malaysia, Suraya Ahmad Pauzi, Consul General of Malaysia in Guangzhou, and Dato Dr Angie Ng, President of the Malaysia Inbound Chinese Association (MICA), inaugurated the event, highlighting the strategic partnership between the two nations.

"Our goal is to reconnect with the Chinese market and showcase the diverse and enriching experiences Malaysia has to offer," stated Samuel Lee. "By engaging directly with consumers in Guangzhou, we are building momentum towards VM2026 and reinforcing Malaysia as a premier travel destination."

The event featured a vibrant display of Malaysian culture, including live demonstrations of traditional crafts like labu saying pottery and batik painting. Exclusive tourism packages tailored for Chinese travelers were also unveiled, offering a glimpse into Malaysia’s rich heritage and natural beauty.

The choice of TeeMall, a high-traffic shopping destination, proved strategic, ensuring maximum exposure and engagement with the local populace. The collaboration with MICA further facilitated direct interaction with potential tourists and industry stakeholders.

Malaysia’s commitment to attracting Chinese visitors is backed by substantial policy support. The extension of the visa-free policy for Chinese nationals until December 2026, coupled with the robust air connectivity of 515 weekly flights, significantly streamlines travel between the two countries.

"The visa-free policy and increased flight frequencies are crucial in fostering closer cultural and economic ties," added Suraya Ahmad Pauzi. "These measures will undoubtedly boost tourism and strengthen the bond between Malaysia and China."

The numbers speak for themselves. In 2024, Malaysia welcomed 3,725,894 Chinese tourists, representing a remarkable 130.9% year-on-year growth. This surge underscores the effectiveness of Malaysia’s tourism strategies and the enduring appeal of its attractions.

Tourism Malaysia’s initiative extends beyond mere numbers, focusing on creating sustainable and meaningful travel experiences. The campaign emphasizes safety, cultural immersion, and personalized travel, aligning with the evolving preferences of Chinese tourists.

"We are not just promoting destinations; we are inviting Chinese visitors to experience the warmth and hospitality of Malaysia," said Dato Dr Angie Ng. "Through MICA, we are ensuring that Chinese travelers have access to authentic and enriching experiences."

The success of the Guangzhou event is expected to pave the way for further promotional activities in key Chinese cities, solidifying Malaysia’s position as a top-of-mind travel choice for Chinese tourists. As VM2026 approaches, Malaysia’s proactive engagement with the Chinese market signals a promising future for its tourism industry.
