Eldoret, Kenya – Uasin Gishu County has taken a significant step towards developing its Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) tourism sector by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Kenyatta International Convention Center (KICC). This partnership aims to establish a framework for a business and convention center, leveraging the region's potential and driving economic growth.

Uasin Gishu Governor Dr. Jonathan Bii emphasized the county and the larger North Rift region's substantial MICE potential, particularly within the North Rift Economic Block (NOREB). He highlighted the county's aspiration to become a leading sports tourism hub, noting that MICE development will be crucial in achieving this goal. "This partnership will unlock numerous MICE opportunities for Uasin Gishu, stimulating regional economic growth," Governor Bii stated. "By combining our local strengths with KICC's expertise and resources, this collaboration will be mutually beneficial for the county and the entire nation."

KICC Chief Executive Officer, James Mwaura, echoed the Governor's sentiments, emphasizing the agreement's focus on attracting both national and international events, with a particular emphasis on sports tourism conventions. He pointed out the potential for job creation, local business stimulation, and increased regional visibility. "Professional conference organizers often prioritize destinations with demonstrable practical experience," Mwaura explained. "This MOU creates a strong foundation for Uasin Gishu and KICC to jointly bid for and host prominent sports tourism events, showcasing the region's capabilities." He further added that the partnership will leverage KICC's established network and marketing reach to position Uasin Gishu as a premier destination for business tourism.

The County Executive for Trade, Cooperatives, and Tourism, Martha Cheruto, highlighted the MOU's role in elevating Uasin Gishu County's profile on both local and international stages, promoting MICE tourism and related aspects. "This agreement will not only enhance our MICE offerings but also showcase the diverse attractions and opportunities available in Uasin Gishu," Cheruto said.

This initiative coincides with the County's ongoing development of the County Museum, a project aimed at diversifying revenue streams and attracting a greater number of visitors. The combined efforts demonstrate Uasin Gishu's commitment to investing in its tourism infrastructure and positioning itself as a competitive destination. The partnership with KICC is expected to provide valuable expertise in developing world-class facilities and services, attracting international conferences, and ultimately driving economic growth in the region. The MOU outlines plans for joint marketing efforts, capacity building programs, and the development of a comprehensive MICE strategy for Uasin Gishu County. Both parties expressed optimism about the future of MICE tourism in the region and the positive impact this partnership will have on the local community.
