Daejeon Metropolitan City held an appointment ceremony for its '2025 Safety and Health Guardians' on April 11th at the City Hall's Grand Conference Room, officially entrusting 20 experts in the field of industrial safety with the crucial task of bolstering safety measures across private sector workplaces and proactively preventing industrial accidents.

The event, designed to mitigate industrial accidents and cultivate a secure working environment within private businesses, was attended by Director General Yoo Se-jong of the Daejeon Metropolitan City's Office of Civil Safety, relevant government officials, and the newly appointed Safety and Health Guardians. The proceedings included the presentation of appointment letters, a resolution ceremony for the prevention of serious industrial accidents, a commemorative photograph session, and practical training aimed at equipping the guardians for their roles.

The 20 Safety and Health Guardians appointed this year will be active from May 1st to December 31st, an eight-month period dedicated to enhancing workplace safety. Their primary focus will be on small-scale construction sites, where they will conduct on-site inspections, provide safety guidance, identify potential hazards, and propose improvement measures.

The role of the Safety and Health Guardians has gained significant prominence, particularly with the expanded application of the Serious Accidents Punishment Act to workplaces with five or more regular employees. This legislative change underscores the increasing importance of robust safety management in private sector operations, making the proactive engagement of these guardians all the more critical in preventing workplace injuries and fatalities.

The appointment ceremony was followed by practical training sessions intended to enhance the guardians' field capabilities. The Construction Safety Department Head of the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency (KOSHA) Daejeon Sejong Metropolitan Headquarters delivered a lecture on "Industrial Accident Prevention Activities Through Case Studies," providing valuable insights into real-world scenarios and effective preventative measures. Subsequently, the Team Leader of the Construction Accident Prevention Division at the Daejeon Regional Employment and Labor Administration offered a detailed explanation of "Key Considerations During Construction Site Inspections," further equipping the guardians with the knowledge necessary for effective oversight. The session also included discussions on the operational plan for the guardians, guidelines for conducting on-site inspections, and a review of key schedules.

Daejeon Metropolitan City has established a robust collaborative framework with the Daejeon Regional Employment and Labor Administration and KOSHA to ensure that the activities of the Safety and Health Guardians extend beyond mere guidance. The city is committed to actively supporting the guardians to facilitate tangible prevention of industrial accidents in the private sector and contribute to systemic improvements in workplace safety regulations. This collaborative approach aims to maximize the impact of the guardians' efforts and create a sustainable culture of safety across Daejeon's industries.

Director General Yoo Se-jong emphasized the paramount importance of cultivating a strong safety awareness in preventing industrial accidents. He stated, "The core of industrial accident prevention lies in enhancing safety consciousness. Identifying and rectifying workplace hazards at an early stage is of utmost importance. We will diligently operate the Safety and Health Guardian system to its full potential and continuously strive to create a safe Daejeon free from industrial accidents."
