SEOUL/SANTA CLARA, CA—Hyundai Motor Company's cutting-edge XCIENT Fuel Cell autonomous truck has been honored as one of TIME magazine's "Best Inventions of 2025," a significant recognition that highlights the vehicle's role in revolutionizing the future of sustainable and efficient long-haul freight. The announcement was made on October 9 (local time), with the groundbreaking vehicle being selected in the "Experimental" category among 300 total innovations.

The award-winning heavy-duty truck is the result of a powerful collaboration between Hyundai Motor and PlusAI, a prominent U.S. developer of autonomous driving software for commercial vehicles. It integrates Hyundai’s world-first mass-produced XCIENT Fuel Cell Class 8 heavy-duty truck platform—a proven zero-tailpipe-emission solution—with PlusAI's advanced Level 4 autonomous driving software, SuperDrive™.

A Leap in Sustainable, Driverless Logistics

The selection by TIME underscores the industry-defining potential of combining two transformative technologies: hydrogen fuel cell propulsion and Level 4 autonomy. Level 4 autonomy signifies a truck's ability to operate autonomously without any need for human intervention under specific conditions, making it an ideal technology for hub-to-hub long-haul logistics.

This combined system offers compelling advantages for the freight industry, which faces challenges like high carbon emissions, driver shortages, and the demand for increased efficiency.

Zero Emissions: The hydrogen fuel cell system provides long-range capabilities with zero tailpipe emissions, a massive step toward decarbonizing the commercial transport sector.
Enhanced Efficiency: The autonomous system, with its ability to maintain continuous operation and optimal driving patterns, significantly improves logistics efficiency and helps mitigate the issue of driver overwork and fatigue.
Proven Technology: According to sources, the XCIENT Fuel Cell platform has demonstrated its reliability with millions of miles in real-world operations globally since its launch in 2020. Similarly, PlusAI’s SuperDrive™ system has logged millions of autonomous miles, ensuring a robust foundation for the integrated product.
Park Chul-youn, Senior Vice President and Head of Hyundai Motor's Global Commercial & LCV Business Division, commented, "This recognition by TIME is a testament to the power of innovation and collaboration. At Hyundai, we aim to contribute to building a sustainable and safe freight ecosystem through hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles, and our partnership with PlusAI is instrumental in realizing this shared vision."

Global Recognition for Korean Innovation

Hyundai’s autonomous hydrogen truck was one of several Korean innovations on the prestigious list. Other notable Korean entries included multiple products from Samsung Electronics, such as a Micro RGB TV, and LG Electronics' LG PuriCare AeroTower air purifier, which features a dedicated seat for pets.

The inclusion of the autonomous XCIENT Fuel Cell truck cements its position as a key development poised to reshape road transport, offering a scalable and sustainable pathway for the next generation of freight delivery across the globe.
