[Global Economic Times] The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs is strengthening management with a focus on stable supply of vegetables used as kimchi ingredients in preparation for the kimchi season by thoroughly managing the growth of horticultural products such as cabbage, which are currently in short supply, to secure maximum supply. He said he would.

Due to the unusually long heat wave this year, the growth of horticultural products, including cabbage, is overall sluggish. However, despite the extremely high temperatures, supplies of onions, green onions, cabbage, Cheongyang peppers, apples, and grapes are sufficient.

Looking at the wholesale prices of major horticultural products as of early October, onions were 16.1% lower, green onions 31.7%, cabbage 26.6%, Cheongyang peppers 8.0%, apples 38.8%, and grapes 42.4% lower than last year.

On the other hand, prices of cabbage, radish, lettuce, perilla leaves, spinach, cucumbers, and zucchini are higher than last year, and growth is slow due to the continued high temperatures from August to September and heavy rain from September 20th to 21st. The main reason is the sluggish performance and decreased supply.

(Chinese cabbage) Currently, the semi-highland second crop is mainly shipped from Pyeongchang, Hoengseong, and Gangneung in Gangwon Province, but growth was sluggish due to high temperatures that continued from early August, the official planting period, until after Chuseok, the closing season. As a result, shipments are somewhat low until mid-October, but from the latter half of the year, the shipment area is expanding to Gyeongbuk and Chungbuk, and the fall cabbage crop in those regions is also recovering from the initial sluggish growth, so shipments are expected to increase significantly.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs is increasing market supply through shipment incentives until mid-October, when shipments have decreased compared to the previous year, and is importing and supplying fresh cabbage to alleviate supply shortages for kimchi and restaurant companies. In addition, although this is a period when kimchi companies consume a lot, discount support is also planned to be implemented until October 16 to alleviate some of the burden on consumers who desperately need home consumption.

In a situation where the cultivation area of (radish) summer radish is decreasing and the crop is sluggish, the price is stronger than the previous year due to the demand for replacement cabbage. However, growing conditions have improved in October, and the crop is recovering, and prices are expected to stabilize from November, when radishes used in the kimchi season begin to be shipped in earnest.

(Lettuce, perilla leaves) Due to poor growth due to high temperatures and flooding damage in Nonsan and Iksan, the main production areas, shipments have decreased, and prices are expected to decline after late October when the growth of damaged crops recovers.

(Spinach) Prices are showing a downward trend due to a slowdown in demand after Chuseok, and are expected to become more stable as the future shipping area expands to Pohang, Gyeongsangbuk-do.

(Tomato, cucumber, zucchini) Due to heat waves, decreased sunlight hours, and rapid temperature changes, the crops in major regions such as Jangsu in Jeollabuk-do (tomatoes) and Cheonan in South Chungcheong Province (cucumbers) are not good, so we are promoting the supply of discounted nutrients for growth recovery through Nonghyup. . With the recovery of tomato crops in Cheorwon, Gangwon and Jangsu, Jeonbuk, cucumbers in Gongju, South Chungcheong Province, and zucchini in Cheongju, North Chungcheong, supply is expected to increase slightly after late October and prices are expected to turn downward.

(Apples) As Hongro, which was not shipped before Chuseok, was shipped until October, shipments increased compared to the previous year and wholesale and retail prices are maintained at low levels. Fuji, which began shipping in October, also had good crop conditions due to the increased daily temperature difference. Production is expected to be at the average level.

(Pear) This year's production was expected to increase compared to previous and average years, but due to high temperatures and heavy rain that continued until after Chuseok, symptoms of sunburn and fever are being discovered. Sunsoe is a phenomenon caused by sunburn due to the heat wave that lasted until after Chuseok, and experts believe that the heat wave was caused by a temporary absorption of moisture from the heavy rain that fell from September 20th to 21st during the latter stage of growth when the fruit grew in size.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs is investigating the damage through the Rural Development Administration, local governments, agricultural cooperatives, and the Korea Rural Economic Institute, and plans to prepare response plans according to the results of the investigation.

Meanwhile, yesterday, October 14, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs urgently held a horticultural agricultural product growth management council to check disaster response preparedness as heavy rain was forecast to fall in the Jeonnam and Gyeongnam regions.

In particular, as rain is predicted to be concentrated in the southern coastal area of Jeollanam-do (Haenam-gun, Jindo-gun, etc.), which is the main production area for outdoor vegetables such as cabbage and green onions, thorough maintenance of drainage channels will be carried out to prevent damage such as loss, and after the rain stops, the government and private sector will He requested thorough growth management by spraying jointly supported nutrients.

In addition, in preparation for the cloudy weather that will continue for the time being for greenhouse vegetables such as green peppers, zucchini, and tomatoes, which are sensitive to sunlight, we will strengthen the fertilization of carbon dioxide, which is highly effective in increasing photosynthetic efficiency, and make every effort to manage the growth of vegetables such as spraying nutrients supplied through Nonghyup. emphasized that

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs believes that if there is a lack of sunlight due to rapid temperature changes or continued cloudy weather in the future, it may have a negative impact on the supply and demand conditions for horticultural agricultural products. It will maintain an emergency response system in preparation for abnormal weather and distribute pest control technology materials to farmers. We plan to strengthen growth management, including guidance on crop safety management tips.

In addition, we plan to do our best to ensure a stable supply of kimchi ingredients by preparing 'measures to stabilize supply and demand of kimchi ingredients' by the end of October.
