Seoul, South Korea – Matsushige Yutaka, the iconic star and director of "The Lonely Gourmet: The Movie," has revealed the surprising origins of the Asian "mukbang" (eating show) craze during a press conference at CGV Yongsan I-Park Mall. The film, marking the first cinematic venture for the beloved series, promises to delight fans with its signature blend of culinary exploration and introspective solitude, this time set against the vibrant backdrop of South Korea.

"Traveling across Korea, I was overwhelmed by the genuine affection Koreans have for 'The Lonely Gourmet,'" Matsushige, affectionately known as "Goro," shared with reporters. "It's remarkable how passionately the younger generation here embraces the series, perhaps even more so than in Japan."

The film's integration of Korean culture and talent has been a significant point of interest. Notably, actor Yoo Jae-myung, renowned for his versatile performances in films like "Voice of Silence" and dramas such as "Itaewon Class," makes a memorable appearance. He plays a Korean immigration officer who aids Goro when he finds himself stranded on a picturesque Korean island. A highlight of Yoo's performance is a comedic scene where he visibly battles hunger while watching Goro savor a steaming bowl of Hwangtae Haejangguk (dried pollack hangover soup).

Matsushige Yutaka's decision to cast Yoo Jae-myung was inspired by his compelling performance in "Voice of Silence" (2020). "I was immediately captivated by his ability to convey deep emotions with subtle expressions," Matsushige explained. "I knew he would bring a unique and authentic presence to the film." Despite his busy schedule with "Itaewon Class," Yoo Jae-myung eagerly accepted the role, demonstrating his admiration for the series.

"Using Korea as a primary setting was a deliberate choice," Matsushige elaborated. "I wanted to explore the rich tapestry of Korean cuisine and culture while also incorporating Korean actors who could resonate with both local and international audiences." He emphasized his extensive research into Korean cinema, highlighting "Voice of Silence" as a pivotal influence. "I felt that Yoo Jae-myung possessed the perfect blend of talent and sensibility to capture the essence of our story."

"The Lonely Gourmet," known for its simple yet profound portrayal of a solitary businessman's culinary adventures, has inadvertently become a cultural phenomenon, laying the groundwork for the explosion of mukbang content across Asia. Its unpretentious depiction of enjoying food, coupled with Matsushige's engaging performance, has struck a chord with viewers worldwide.

"The Lonely Gourmet: The Movie" not only celebrates the universal joy of food but also underscores the power of cultural exchange. The film's success is a testament to the enduring appeal of authentic storytelling and the shared human experience of savoring life's simple pleasures. With Yoo Jae-myung's contribution, the film is poised to become a beloved addition to the series' legacy, further cementing its influence on the global stage.
