Paraguay's Forestry Sector Poised to Become Key Economic Driver

Asuncion, Paraguay – Paraguay's forestry sector is rapidly emerging as a pivotal force in the nation's economic landscape. According to Manuel Jimenez Gaona, president of the Paraguayan Wood Federation, timber exports are projected to surge, potentially reaching levels comparable to the country's prominent livestock and agricultural exports within the next 10 to 15 years.

In 2024, Paraguay's forestry sector achieved approximately $100 million in export revenue. Key export commodities include charcoal, plywood, and raw wood, which collectively constitute 80% of the sector's total exports. This growth can be attributed to Paraguay's abundant forest resources and advantageous climate conditions.

Notably, Paraguay's climate is exceptionally well-suited for eucalyptus production, yielding higher growth rates than those observed in neighboring Argentina and Uruguay. This climatic advantage positions Paraguay as a formidable competitor in the regional market.

A critical factor contributing to the forestry sector's expansion is the attainment of certifications from organizations such as the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC). These certifications are indispensable for accessing key markets in the United States, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Uruguay, and other nations.

By adhering to international forest certification standards, Paraguay can ensure the sustainability of its forest products, cultivate consumer trust, and bolster its export competitiveness.

Furthermore, the recent enactment of carbon credit regulations has unlocked new funding avenues for forest owners. By leveraging the CO2 sequestration capacity of their forests, owners can generate additional revenue through the sale of carbon credits, thereby facilitating increased investment in sustainable forest management. This development is poised to play a crucial role in fostering the sustainable growth of Paraguay's forestry sector.

The Paraguayan government, acknowledging the sector's immense potential, is actively strengthening its policy support. Through initiatives such as increased investment in sustainable forest management, support for technological advancements, and the reinforcement of international cooperation, Paraguay's forestry sector is poised to solidify its position as a cornerstone of the nation's future economic prosperity.
