Nature and Education Unite at Argentina's First Provincial Park

Colonia Elía, Argentina – The 'Green Islands and Waterways' Natural Reserve, nestled along the Uruguay River in Colonia Elía, Entre Ríos, has been designated as the province's first Provincial Park, marking a significant milestone for regional culture, tourism, and environmental conservation. This unique space offers students an unparalleled opportunity to connect with nature through immersive educational experiences.

Officially declared a 'Natural Reserve,' the park features guided kayak tours that explore its scenic islands. Recently, it has expanded its offerings to include free camping, providing tents and sleeping bags to visitors. Located on the shores of Puerto Campichuelo, the park boasts extensive facilities, including a kitchen, refrigerator, restrooms, showers, drinking water, and Wi-Fi, ensuring a comfortable stay for campers.

Outdoor Education for Students

In collaboration with the Entre Ríos General Education Council (CGE) and the Fundación Banco de Bosques, and with support from the Provincial Ministry of Environment, the park serves as a dynamic outdoor classroom. The 'Kayak Program for Schools' begins with students arriving in the morning, followed by a 4-hour kayak expedition around the islands after lunch (provided by each group). Following basic training on the shore and a boat ride to the islands, students safely paddle under the guidance of expert instructors.

Upon completing their adventure, students participate in a symbolic 'Kayak Baptism' ceremony. They are welcomed through a tunnel formed by their friends' paddles and receive certificates from the Banco de Bosques Foundation, adorned with the flags of Argentina and Uruguay. This program is also being implemented on the Uruguayan side. The organizers emphasize that it is "an unforgettable experience combining education, adventure, and environmental awareness."

The day concludes with camping, including dinner and a bonfire. The park accommodates up to two schools, approximately 30 students each, per day, operating year-round. The instructors are trained in emergency response, and comprehensive safety protocols are in place.

Ecological Value and Tourism Potential

The 'Green Islands and Waterways' park spans 4,006 hectares, comprising 14 islands, and showcases ecologically valuable environments such as wetlands, grasslands, and riverside forests. It is evolving into a hub for tourism, education, and research, in addition to preserving natural and cultural heritage.

The project was initiated with the support of American philanthropist Gilbert Butler, who recognized the conservation value of the Uruguay River islands during his visit and pledged financial support. The park's establishment is a collaborative effort involving the Entre Ríos Provincial Directorate of Land Management, Protected Areas, and Biodiversity; the Municipality of Colonia Elía; WCS Argentina; Banco de Bosques; AMBÁ Uruguay; and the Butler Conservation Inc.

How to Participate

Schools interested in participating in the program can contact Martina Quinodoz, the kayak program coordinator, at 3442 54-9274. The park offers a unique opportunity to learn and enjoy nature, setting a precedent for community and environmental stewardship.
