ASUNCION, Paraguay – Paraguay's First Lady, Leticia Ocampos, presided over Paraguay's National Day ceremony at the Osaka World Expo, delivering a moving tribute to the "strong, brave, and resilient" women of Paraguay.

President Santiago Peña lauded the First Lady's efforts via his social media, stating, "Today, the heart of Paraguay shone in Japan. We thank @LetiOcamposP for such a proud and delicate tribute to our Kuña Guapa (hardworking women) at Expo Osaka 2025."

During Paraguay's National Day celebration at the Expo last Monday, the First Lady underscored the decisive role played by Paraguayan women throughout their nation's history. The central message of the event focused on "The Power of Paraguayan Women," acknowledging both their historical and contemporary roles, from their struggle for visibility and rights to their cultural and social influence.

"We want the world to know who Paraguayan women are, what her legacy has been in the most difficult moments of our history, and how today she continues to lead transforming processes," the First Lady affirmed.

Las Residentas: A Symbol of Strength and Patriotism

The epic axis of Kuña Guapa drew inspiration from Las Residentas. These were the women who left their homes during the Triple Alliance War (1864-1870) to accompany the Paraguayan army, assisting with medical and agricultural work, and even fighting on the front lines. Their heroic actions were essential during the nation's reconstruction following this devastating war, which is estimated to have killed nearly 90% of Paraguay's male population.

Between 1868 and 1910, these women undertook the monumental task of rebuilding the nation, a legacy permanently etched in Paraguayan history. Their sacrifice and dedication remain the bedrock of the Paraguayan social spirit.

The tribute to these women transcended mere remembrance, taking the form of a living artistic expression. A high-fashion art parade unfolded through moving, aesthetic, and cultural performances. Dancer-models moved to the rhythm of guaranía, a musical genre designated as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, wearing garments made from traditional Paraguayan textiles. This performance conveyed the story of Las Residentas and the legacy of resilience, beauty, and strength that defines Paraguayan women.

An Intimate Space for Cultural Exchange and Strengthening Paraguay's Stature

The event was meticulously curated as a delicate and intimate experience expressing the soul of Paraguayan women in every detail, from the musical backdrop to the choice of textiles and dances. It also served as an ideal platform to strengthen ties with international representatives, artists, social leaders, and women's empowerment advocates, fostering cultural exchange and elevating Paraguay's standing on the global stage.

In particular, the costumes, a blend of traditional Paraguayan craftsmanship and contemporary design, captivated the attendees. The dresses, adorned with intricate embroidery and traditional patterns, offered a glimpse into the delicate artistry and aesthetic sensibilities of Paraguayan women.

Culture as a Universal Language

Beyond the homage to Las Residentas, Kuña Guapa emphasized the power of art and culture as a means of diplomacy and national representation. Every dress in the fashion show, every melody played, and every word spoken unveiled a unique facet of Paraguayan identity: its ancestral traditions, the power of the Guaraní language, the elegance of its embroidery, and its historical depth.

This cultural expression was more than just a display of Paraguay's beauty; it was a crucial message to the world about the nation's spirit and resilience, forged through a long history. The event served as a prime example of how Paraguayan culture can transcend borders, move hearts, and promote understanding.

Paraguay's Vision Through the Osaka Expo

The Osaka Expo, under the concept of "Ikigai," or 'reason for being,' serves as a global exhibition to showcase Paraguay's values to the world. This aligns with the government's objective to position Paraguay as a reliable destination for trade, investment, and tourism.

Paraguay's participation in this platform represents a strategic opportunity to strengthen bilateral trade with Japan and attract investments. In 2023, Paraguay's exports to Japan reached $50 million, while imports exceeded $100 million, indicating active economic exchange between the two countries.

Anticipated advancements in Paraguay-Japan relations post-Expo include opening new markets for Paraguayan products, signing agreements for investment promotion and reciprocal protection, cooperation on the bioceanic corridor (Atlantic-Pacific connection), and promoting carbon credit initiatives.

Furthermore, prospects for opening the Japanese market to Paraguayan beef, visa exemption for ordinary passport holders, and invitations for trade missions to visit Paraguay are also being discussed. These discussions demonstrate Paraguay's commitment to strengthening its position as a global economic partner and playing a more active role, especially in the Asian market.

Paraguay's National Day event at the Osaka Expo was a successful example of cultural diplomacy and a significant occasion to showcase the strength and resilience of Paraguayan women to the world. It will contribute to proving that Paraguay is more than just an agricultural nation, possessing rich culture and potential.
