Uruguay, despite its small size, is gaining international recognition for its rich cultural heritage and natural beauty. Three of its villages, 19 de Abril, Santiago Vázquez, and Aiguá, have been honored by UN Tourism as part of its "Best Tourism Villages" initiative, highlighting the country's commitment to sustainable and authentic travel experiences.

These villages were chosen from a pool of 600 candidates, meeting criteria that emphasize low population density (under 15,000 inhabitants), active engagement in traditional practices like agriculture and fishing, and strong ties to local communities. This recognition not only celebrates the unique charm of these Uruguayan destinations but also underscores the importance of preserving their cultural and natural heritage.

19 de Abril: A Rural Retreat

Nestled in the Rocha Department, 19 de Abril, also known as Chafalote, is a tranquil village with just over 200 residents. Its strong sense of community and proximity to natural wonders like Laguna de Castillos and Parque Protegido Laguna de Rocha make it an ideal destination for those seeking a peaceful escape in eastern Uruguay. The serene rural landscape, dotted with rivers and streams, offers a perfect respite from the bustle of city life.

Santiago Vázquez: Where Nature Meets Recreation

Located on the western edge of Montevideo, Santiago Vázquez harmoniously blends nature and local identity. Surrounded by the Santa Lucía Wetlands Natural Park, it's a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering opportunities for hiking, fishing, and birdwatching. The village's sports boat harbor and regatta course add to its appeal for water sports lovers, while the nearby Lecocq Park, a protected ecological area, showcases diverse flora and fauna.

Aiguá: A Historic Mountain Town

In the mountainous region of northern Maldonado Department, Aiguá boasts a rich history spanning over a century. Its well-preserved architecture and central square evoke a sense of timelessness, offering visitors a chance to immerse themselves in both nature and history. The quiet environment, framed by scenic mountains, makes it an ideal weekend getaway.

Uruguay's Tourism Potential Recognized

The selection of these villages as "Best Tourism Villages" aligns with UN Tourism's mission to promote sustainable tourism and highlight the value of rural areas that maintain traditional ways of life. 19 de Abril, Santiago Vázquez, and Aiguá, each with its distinctive charm, showcase the diverse facets of Uruguay, attracting travelers who appreciate nature and culture. These villages are not just tourist destinations; they are symbols of Uruguay's identity, now recognized on the global stage.
