Danang's Korean Community Takes a Big Leap Toward a New International School

Danang, Vietnam – In a move set to transform the educational landscape for its burgeoning Korean population, Danang is officially moving forward with plans for a new Korean International School. The establishment committee for the long-awaited project was formally launched, bringing the dream of a stable and high-quality educational environment for Korean children in central Vietnam a significant step closer to reality.

The announcement was made by the Korean Association in Central Vietnam (KACV), which is spearheading the initiative. The committee will be led by Mr. Jang Soon-bong, chairman of KAS Holdings, a figure widely recognized for his pivotal role in the founding and development of the Hanoi Korean International School. Jang's experience, which spans from the project's inception in 2002 to the completion of the school building in 2012, is seen as a key asset. The Hanoi school has since grown into the largest Korean educational institution in Vietnam, serving over 2,115 students and employing 364 faculty members.

Danang, a city increasingly popular with Korean tourists and expatriates, has seen a rapid increase in its Korean population. Last year alone, over 4.57 million Koreans visited Vietnam, with more than 20% of them traveling to Danang. This influx has caused the local Korean community to swell to over 8,000 residents, creating an urgent need for formal education options. The success of the existing weekend Korean language school, which has evolved into a hub for cultural and historical education, laid the groundwork for the push for a full-fledged international school.

The newly formed committee is tasked with a wide range of responsibilities, including engaging in administrative discussions with local authorities, attracting investment, and developing a comprehensive curriculum. The ultimate goal is not only to serve the educational needs of the local Korean community but also to foster stronger educational and cultural ties between South Korea and Vietnam.

A joint ceremony hosted by the KACV and the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Danang is scheduled for September 26th at the Wink Hotel Riverside. In a statement, a representative from the Korean Association emphasized the broader significance of the project. "The launch of this committee is more than just an official start," the representative said. "It is a crucial starting point for educational exchange that will connect the future generations of Korea and Vietnam."
