LG Display Pioneers Mass Production of 40-Inch Automotive Displays for Sony Honda Mobility's 'Afeela'

SEOUL – LG Display announced on February 24th that it has become the first in the industry to mass produce 40-inch automotive displays. This groundbreaking product will be featured in 'Afeela', the first sedan from Sony Honda Mobility, a joint venture between Sony and Honda.

The '40-inch Pillar to Pillar (P2P)' product, which is now in full-scale production, spans the entire width of the car's interior, stretching from the left edge of the driver's side pillar to the right edge of the passenger's side pillar. With the growing prominence of Software Defined Vehicles (SDVs), where vehicle performance is controlled by software, there is a rising demand for large, user-friendly displays.

The adoption of an extra-large display in vehicles allows both the driver and passengers to utilize their desired screen functions simultaneously. In contrast to conventional automotive displays where screen size is reduced when multiple functions are used concurrently, the 40-inch P2P display enables the driver to view driving information on their screen while passengers can enjoy movies or games on the passenger screen without any size constraints.

The display also incorporates a feature that controls the viewing angle, ensuring that the driver remains focused on the road. This innovative technology, which LG Display is the first in the industry to commercialize, prevents driver distraction by adjusting the passenger screen to be invisible from the driver's perspective, thereby promoting safer driving.

This product is set to be integrated into Sony Honda Mobility's 'Afeela', enhancing the utilization of AI-based driving assistance systems and a wide range of entertainment features.

LG Display is expanding its product portfolio from conventional TV and IT panels to include automotive displays. This strategic move aims to overcome the challenges posed by declining demand for IT devices in the display industry by diversifying its product offerings. Market research firm Omdia forecasts that the global automotive display market will grow from US$11.48 billion (approximately 16 trillion KRW) in 2024 to US$15.16 billion (approximately 21 trillion KRW) by 2028. LG Display, having entered the premium automotive display market in 2019, has solidified its position as the market leader, holding a 25.5% share in 2023.
