Taekwondo Instructor on the Run for a Month on Sexual Assault Charges… Will More Victims Emerge?

Limpio, Paraguay - A taekwondo instructor indicted on charges of sexually assaulting and raping a minor student under the age of 15 at a taekwondo academy has been on the run for a month. The court summoned him for a custody hearing on June 18 but declared him a fugitive and issued an arrest warrant when he failed to appear. As news of this incident spreads, additional victims are showing signs of coming forward to file complaints, suggesting the controversy is likely to escalate.

Victim 'A' (15) testified that she was deceived by the instructor, who offered to massage her for an injury sustained during taekwondo training, and then subjected to the crime. At the time, the instructor reportedly turned off the lights inside the academy and approached 'A' to assault her. 'A' found it difficult to speak directly and instead wrote down the details of the abuse on paper to inform her mother.

'A''s mother, empowered by her daughter's brave confession, immediately reported the incident to the police, and the case was forwarded to the prosecutor's office. Prosecutor Nadia Millán, who is handling the case, has reportedly secured 'A''s psychological report, which is said to contain evidence of sexual coercion. 'A' is currently undergoing psychological treatment for trauma resulting from the incident.

Lisandri Ruiz Díaz, the victim's lawyer, stated that 'A''s mother bravely reported the incident and is pursuing the case to the end. She emphasized, "The mother wants justice to be served, and with an arrest warrant issued, she wants the perpetrator to face the judgment of the law."

The offending instructor appeared before the prosecutor's office a month ago to deny the charges, but his whereabouts have been unknown since. The arrest warrant issued by the court means he is currently being pursued by investigative authorities.

As this incident gained media attention, news spread that other minor victims who suffered similar abuse from the same instructor in the past are gaining courage to join in filing complaints. Lawyer Ruiz Díaz stated, "We know that many more minor victims suffered the same kind of attacks in the past," and that they are preparing to file additional complaints.

However, these potential victims are reportedly hesitant to come forward due to fear of retaliation and anxiety that their long-held silence might not be believed. This highlights a common difficulty faced by victims of sexual assault, demonstrating the critical importance of social support and trust.

Sexual Crimes: Breaking the Silence and Bringing Them into Public Discourse

This incident once again underscores the severity of child sexual abuse occurring under the guise of education. The social shock is particularly profound because someone in a position of authority, like a taekwondo instructor, abused their power to commit crimes against minors.

Child sexual abuse leaves deep, lifelong scars on victims, making it difficult for them to lead normal lives due to trauma. Therefore, along with strict enforcement of laws against such crimes, it is paramount to create an environment where victims can safely speak out.

Experts point out that in cases of child sexual abuse, securing evidence is often difficult due to the victim's vulnerability and the perpetrator's cunning methods, and victims often recant their statements or remain silent due to psychological intimidation. Thus, victim-centered investigation and support systems must be strengthened, and psychological support is essential from initial counseling through all legal procedures.

In the wake of this incident, there is a growing call to further improve public awareness of child sexual abuse and strengthen prevention education. Institutional measures are needed, such as establishing guidelines for preventing sexual crimes in spaces frequently used by children, like academies and sports facilities, and mandating sexual ethics education for instructors.

Furthermore, sex education that empowers children to protect their own bodies and recognize dangerous situations is also crucial. Families, schools, and society must work together to eradicate child sexual abuse and create an environment where all children can grow up safely.

As the investigation into the offending taekwondo instructor continues, it is hoped that more courageous testimonies from additional victims will emerge, allowing all victims to find justice and begin their healing process.
