Korail Gwangju Headquarters and Hope Railway Foundation Contribute to Improving Learning Environments for Multicultural Families

Jointly donated desks, bookshelves, and chair sets worth 7 million won… Employee woodworking club’s direct production adds more meaning

Korail Gwangju Headquarters and the Hope Railway Foundation, in a joint labor-management effort, actively engaged in social contribution activities for co-prosperity with the local community by holding a donation event for multicultural families. This event is particularly noteworthy as it went beyond a simple donation of goods by delivering furniture directly made by Korail employees, adding a genuine touch to the act of sharing.

The donation ceremony, held on the 11th at Gwangju Buk-gu Office, was attended by key stakeholders including officials from Korail Gwangju Headquarters, executives and staff from the Hope Railway Foundation, officials from the Honam Regional Headquarters of the Railway Workers' Union, and officials from Gwangju Buk-gu Office, all sharing the spirit of giving.

Through this donation, Korail Gwangju Headquarters and the Hope Railway Foundation delivered desks, bookshelves, and chair sets, valued at 7 million won (approximately $5,000 USD), to 20 low-income multicultural households in the Buk-gu area of Gwangju. This initiative aims to provide stable learning spaces for children from multicultural families who urgently need improved learning environments, thereby enhancing their academic achievement and supporting their healthy growth. While the number of multicultural families in Korea continues to increase, low-income multicultural families often face difficulties in accessing basic educational infrastructure, making such support crucial.

Notably, these donated items hold special significance as they were directly designed and produced by employees of Korail's woodworking club. The handcrafted furniture, imbued with the voluntary talent contribution and sincerity of the employees, is evaluated to have maximized the value of sharing by delivering not only material aid but also warm hearts to the recipient families. This stands as an exemplary case of realizing social value through the active participation of employees, beyond mere corporate social contribution activities.

Kim Young-jin, head of Korail Gwangju Headquarters, stated at the event, "We hope that the furniture, embodying the warm hearts and skilled craftsmanship of our employees, will be of practical help in improving the learning environment for children from multicultural families." He also expressed his commitment, "We will continue to actively engage in communication and co-prosperity with the local community, fulfilling our role as a public enterprise that actively leads in realizing social value."

Korail Gwangju Headquarters has consistently carried out various social contribution activities for the local community. It has strived to fulfill its social responsibility as a public enterprise by communicating with local residents in various ways, including supporting vulnerable groups, environmental protection campaigns, and traffic safety education. The Hope Railway Foundation also continuously promotes welfare projects for railway industry workers and vulnerable groups in the local community, contributing to its social role.

This donation of goods to multicultural families is an important part of Korail's commitment to ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management philosophy, expected to strengthen ties with the local community and deliver warmth to underserved neighbors. Korail Gwangju Headquarters plans to continue expanding practical social contribution programs for co-growth with the local community.
