TAIPEI — South Korea’s leading display giants, Samsung Display and LG Display, are locked in a fierce technological battle in Taiwan, the heart of the global IT hardware industry. Ahead of Computex 2026, Asia's largest information technology exhibition, both companies have unveiled their latest premium Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) technologies, aiming to capture leadership in the rapidly growing high-end gaming market. The two display powerhouses are showcasing cutting-edge solutions that push the boundaries of refresh rates, resolutions, and brightness to appeal to major global PC and monitor manufacturers.
Samsung Display kickstarted its campaign at the Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center, showcasing a massive lineup of 16 gaming-specific OLED and Quantum Dot (QD) OLED products. The company’s exhibition spans a wide range of form factors, from ultra-portable 8.8-inch OLED panels designed for handheld gaming PCs to massive 49-inch curved QD-OLED monitors.
Among the highlights is Samsung’s newly unveiled 'Ultra Slim' OLED panel for laptops. This next-generation display reduces thickness by more than 20% compared to existing commercial laptop OLEDs, drastically improving device portability without sacrificing performance. It supports a blistering 240Hz refresh rate and meets VESA’s stringent DisplayHDR True Black 1000 certification standards.
In the desktop monitor segment, Samsung introduced a groundbreaking milestone: the world’s first QD-OLED panel to simultaneously achieve a 4K resolution and a staggering 360Hz refresh rate. To achieve this, Samsung optimized its internal circuitry and driving systems, effectively overcoming the massive data processing bottlenecks typically associated with high-resolution, ultra-high-refresh-rate panels. Additionally, the company revealed its 'Penta Tandem' technology, which increases the blue OLED emission layer from four to five layers, delivering significantly higher peak brightness and crisper visuals optimized for HDR content and intense gaming environments.
"The technological paradigm in the high-end gaming display market has officially shifted from traditional Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs) to self-emitting displays," stated Son Dong-il, Head of the Large Display Business Unit and IT Business Team at Samsung Display, underscoring the irreversible transition toward OLED.
Concurrently, LG Display is launching an aggressive customer-centric campaign by hosting the 'Taiwan Gaming OLED Roadshow'. Running from June 4 to June 10, the exclusive event has invited representatives from more than 20 major global gaming monitor manufacturers to experience LG’s latest advancements and discuss strategic partnerships. LG Display is demonstrating its comprehensive product portfolio alongside its next-generation technological roadmap, featuring dedicated side-by-side comparison zones where clients can directly witness the performance gap between OLED and legacy LCD panels.
LG Display boasts an extensive lineup ranging from 20-inch to 40-inch class gaming OLEDs. The flagship of their showcase is the 39-inch ultra-wide OLED monitor panel, which stands as the world's first to deliver a 5K2K resolution. With a 21:9 cinematic aspect ratio and an aggressive 1500R curvature, the panel maximizes immersion for panoramic gaming. It utilizes an RGB Stripe structure to enhance text readability and supports a smooth 240Hz refresh rate.
In its next-generation technology zone, LG Display turned heads by unveiling a gaming OLED panel capable of reaching an unprecedented peak brightness of 2,000 nits while fully satisfying the VESA DisplayHDR True Black 1000 standard. This breakthrough ensures vivid, lifelike images with near-infinite contrast ratios. Furthermore, the company introduced a high-density 27-inch 5K OLED panel, alongside proprietary software innovations including Black Frame Insertion (BFI) and Dynamic Frequency and Resolution (DFR) 2.0. To minimize screen glare—a common complaint among competitive gamers—LG has deployed an advanced surface treatment technology that slashes reflectivity to an astonishingly low 0.3%.
"Based on our deeply entrenched technological leadership in the large-sized OLED sector, we will actively present our current and next-generation solutions to global clients, thereby solidifying and expanding our strategic partnerships," said Lee Hyun-woo, Head of the Large Display Business Unit at LG Display. As both Korean titans showcase their distinct engineering philosophies, the gaming community stands to benefit from an unprecedented wave of visual innovation.
