Gangwon Province Celebrates Diversity with 18th International Migrants Day Commemoration

CHUNCHEON, Gangwon Province – Gangwon Province recently hosted its 18th annual International Migrants Day commemorative event, emphasizing unity and inclusion within its growing multicultural community. Held on June 20th at the Chuncheon Hoban Gymnasium, the event, themed "Gangwon, Where All Dream Together and Become One," brought together approximately 800 individuals, including multicultural families, immigrant women and their children, and staff from 18 city and county family centers.

Dignitaries present included Governor Kim Jin-tae, Provincial Superintendent of Education Shin Kyung-ho, and National Assembly member Han Ki-ho, underscoring the provincial government's commitment to fostering a harmonious multicultural society.

The commemoration commenced with a vibrant performance by the Chuncheon Mime Festival's 'Mime Citizen' project team, setting an engaging tone for the proceedings. The ceremony's first segment featured commendations for individuals who have significantly contributed to multicultural integration, alongside poignant presentations by immigrant women sharing their personal journeys of settling in Gangwon. A highlight was the celebratory performance by the Rainbow Nanta team, an association of married immigrants from Inje County, showcasing their cultural vibrancy.

The second part of the event transitioned into an athletic meeting designed to promote interaction and unity, featuring group sports activities like basket stacking. Complementing the main events, a series of promotional booths were set up in the lobby. Five organizations, including the Gangwon Immigrant Women's Counseling Center and the Gangwon Women's Job Center, provided essential counseling and information to married immigrants and foreign residents. NH Nonghyup Bank Gangwon Headquarters also participated with an 'Eat Breakfast Campaign,' demonstrating broader community support.

Governor Kim Jin-tae reiterated the provincial government's proactive stance on population growth and multicultural family support. "Gangwon Province provides 100 million won in support for families raising a child in the province, and we have relaxed the criteria for multi-child benefits from the existing three children to two," Governor Kim stated. "We will continue our efforts to make Gangwon Province an ideal place for families to have and raise children."

This annual event aligns with the spirit of International Migrants Day, officially observed globally on December 18th. Proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2000, the day aims to acknowledge the substantial contributions of migrants to societies worldwide, advocate for the protection of their rights, and raise awareness about the unique challenges they encounter. It serves as a crucial platform to combat discrimination and xenophobia, promoting a more informed and balanced understanding of migration's vital role in economic growth and cultural diversity.

South Korea has experienced a significant demographic shift, evolving into a multicultural society driven by factors such as a declining birth rate, an aging population, and an increasing influx of foreign workers and international marriages. As of 2022, there were nearly 400,000 multicultural households across the nation, representing a growing segment of the population. While migrants contribute significantly to various sectors, they often face challenges including language barriers, cultural differences, and social integration issues. In response, the Korean government enacted the Multicultural Families Support Act in 2008 and operates numerous support centers nationwide, offering Korean language education, psychological counseling, and employment assistance.

Gangwon Province's dedication extends beyond financial incentives. Local multicultural family support centers provide a range of services, from Korean language education and parenting support to family counseling and programs fostering bilingual environments for children. These comprehensive initiatives are crucial in helping multicultural families integrate seamlessly and thrive within the community. By hosting events like the International Migrants Day commemoration and implementing supportive policies, Gangwon Province reinforces its commitment to building an inclusive society where all residents, regardless of their origin, can prosper together.
