Dal-seo District Launches ‘Focus on Nutrition’ for Multicultural Families

Dal-seo District has initiated the ‘Dal-seo Focus on Nutrition’ program, a comprehensive support initiative aimed at helping multicultural families establish healthy eating habits. This practical, life-oriented educational program is specifically designed to assist multicultural families, with their diverse cultural backgrounds, in adapting to the Korean dietary lifestyle and addressing potential nutritional imbalances.

The ‘Focus on Nutrition’ program is structured into four distinct sessions, each focusing on critical aspects of nutrition and meal preparation. The curriculum includes an introduction to fundamental nutritional concepts and food groups, an in-depth understanding of the "Food Cycling Chart," practical cooking sessions utilizing supplementary food items, and a creative recipe presentation incorporating participants' native cuisines. The Food Cycling Chart, a visual representation of recommended dietary patterns based on Korean nutritional intake standards, emphasizes the importance of a balanced diet and regular exercise for maintaining good health, presented in an easy-to-understand format for broad accessibility.

A particularly well-received component of the program has been the practical sessions on preparing baby food and snacks, which have garnered significant positive feedback from participants. In collaboration with Keimyung University’s Department of Food Science and Nutrition, the program also leverages educational materials developed by the university, titled ‘Bbyongbbyong Nutrition Education Lab.’ Building on this, a ‘Visiting Cooking Class’ is set to be launched, where university students will directly visit participating households to cook alongside family members, providing personalized guidance and fostering a more intimate learning environment. One participant expressed her satisfaction, stating, “Korean food was still difficult for me, and I couldn't properly prepare baby food for my child. But after trying it myself today, I realized it's not that hard, and I feel confident doing it at home now.”

Lee Tae-hoon, Mayor of Dal-seo District, highlighted the positive societal implications of the program, remarking, “It is a very desirable social direction to see local university students utilizing their majors to address community health issues.” He further emphasized the district's ongoing commitment, adding, “We will continue to provide unwavering support to ensure that multicultural families can firmly establish themselves as healthy members of our local community.”

This initiative by the Dal-seo District is part of a broader nationwide effort in South Korea to integrate multicultural families more seamlessly into society, addressing not only dietary needs but also cultural and social challenges. As South Korea's demographic landscape continues to diversify, with an increasing number of international marriages and foreign residents, programs like ‘Focus on Nutrition’ become increasingly vital. They contribute to the well-being of multicultural families, ensuring their successful integration and promoting a harmonious and inclusive society. The collaboration between local government and academic institutions like Keimyung University exemplifies a proactive and effective approach to community development, leveraging expert knowledge to create tangible benefits for residents. Such partnerships are crucial for building resilient communities that support all their members, regardless of their cultural origins, and foster a collective sense of belonging and health.
