Singapore – BHP, the world's largest mining company, has announced the establishment of its first industrial Artificial Intelligence (AI) hub in Singapore, signaling an acceleration of digital transformation and AI adoption across the mining and resources sector. This hub aims to solve company-wide challenges using AI technology, with a focus on enhancing safety and increasing productivity. Set to be established in May, the hub will see BHP's AI experts leading efforts to integrate data-driven decision-making, intelligent systems, and automation into core operations.

Singapore's Strategic Choice and Collaborative Partnerships

BHP selected Singapore as the optimal location for enhancing its AI capabilities due to its innovation ecosystem, robust digital infrastructure, and alignment with BHP's goal of scaling technology that delivers operational value. This choice reflects Singapore's standing as a technology hub in the Asia-Pacific region. BHP is establishing this hub with the support of Enterprise Singapore and in partnership with AI Singapore (AISG). AI Singapore is an AI program under the National University of Singapore, dedicated to accelerating AI adoption across various industries. This collaboration is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening BHP's digital capabilities in Singapore and the wider region. A team of AI experts will drive collaboration between BHP teams and local AI partners to tackle business challenges.

AI's Tangible Impact and Future Vision

BHP is already leveraging AI to positively impact its real-world operating systems. At the Escondida copper mine in Chile, AI-powered plant control has saved 3 billion liters of water and 118 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of energy since fiscal year 2022 (FY22). This exemplifies the immense potential of AI in the mining sector regarding environmental sustainability and operational efficiency. Escondida is the world's largest copper producer, and BHP's AI adoption there is expected to enhance production efficiency and positively influence the global copper supply chain.

This hub will be instrumental in creating collaborative opportunities and building capabilities to fully harness AI's potential across BHP's global operations. Johan van Jaarsveld, BHP's Chief Technology Officer (CTO), stated, "As BHP accelerates its digital transformation and builds internal AI capabilities, we see tremendous opportunities to partner with AI Singapore and other global leaders to deliver solutions to complex, company-wide challenges." He also expressed enthusiasm for the potential of these partnerships to develop practical and innovative solutions that will make operations safer and more productive, setting new standards across the industry.

Trends in AI Adoption in the Mining Industry

The mining industry is currently undergoing a significant transformation, with the adoption of AI and advanced technologies revolutionizing inefficient structures. AI-powered systems are streamlining operations by optimizing exploration, drilling, and production. For instance, advanced AI algorithms can analyze geological data to more accurately identify high-potential mining areas, reducing the need for costly exploratory drilling. Furthermore, predictive maintenance technologies monitor equipment performance and anticipate potential failures, minimizing unplanned downtime and significantly reducing maintenance costs.

BHP's establishment of this AI hub is part of its proactive efforts to participate in this digital transformation within the mining sector. As of 2022, over 30% of trucks at BHP's iron ore mines in Western Australia were automated, with AI supporting decision-making for safer and more efficient operations. BHP is also using AI to improve procurement processes, enhance financial forecasting, and contribute to achieving sustainability goals. The Singapore hub is expected to further advance these existing AI applications and become a focal point for global collaboration in developing new AI solutions.

BHP's AI hub in Singapore is more than just a technological investment; it's a strategic move to redefine the safety, productivity, and sustainability of future mining. With Singapore's robust tech ecosystem and BHP's mining expertise combined, it remains to be seen whether impactful AI innovations will emerge across the entire mining industry.
