CHEONAN, South Korea – Cheonan City is embarking on an ambitious initiative to cultivate artificial intelligence (AI) talent, transforming itself into a leading smart city by collaborating with local universities. The city announced on May 19th that its joint project with Dankook University and Korea University of Technology and Education (Koreatech), titled "Adding Competence Based on Smart City Infrastructure," has been selected for Chungcheongnam-do Province's "Regional Innovation Centered University Support System (RISE) Project" under the regional issue resolution category.

This strategic partnership aims to establish a robust educational and research system, directly linked to Cheonan's ongoing "Hub Smart City Creation Project." The core objective is to nurture practical, field-ready AI professionals. This initiative is a proactive response to the rapid advancements in AI technology and the accelerated pace of digital transformation, focusing on securing essential technical talent for the future.

Cheonan City, in concert with its academic partners, plans to implement several key strategies. These include establishing education and research systems based on smart city data, operating customized practical training programs in conjunction with domestic and international enterprises, fostering global market entry for local urban tech companies through network connections, and enhancing employment and startup support in collaboration with tech companies.

The program is designed to cater to a diverse range of participants, including local residents, employees of existing businesses, and job seekers. Through practical training utilizing the latest smart city technologies and data, participants will gain a deep understanding of the principles behind daily-life smart services and acquire immediately applicable technical skills, significantly boosting their professional capabilities.

Cultivating an AI-Driven Ecosystem

Cheonan expects this collaborative venture to significantly enhance its capacity to address local challenges using AI, fostering the growth of related industries. Furthermore, it aims to systematically strengthen regional capabilities to flexibly adapt to the evolving landscape of AI-driven technology.

Dankook University and Koreatech, both renowned for their strengths in fostering convergent talent, bring exceptional competitiveness to the table in cultivating AI technology professionals. Their participation is crucial to the project's success.

Moreover, the initiative will leverage collaborations with global tech giants such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud, Unity Technologies, and Salesforce. These partnerships will provide state-of-the-art AI practical training environments and facilitate Proof of Concept (PoC) projects for smart city applications, accelerating the development of globally competitive local talent. Such industry-academia collaborations are critical in ensuring that the curriculum remains relevant and cutting-edge, equipping students with the skills demanded by the rapidly evolving tech industry.

Cheonan's Vision: A Digital City Pioneering AI Innovation

Cheonan City anticipates that this project will enable it to proactively respond to the AI era and foster an environment where citizens and local businesses can grow together amidst rapidly shifting technological paradigms. This initiative is poised to propel Cheonan into becoming a leading digital city that spearheads AI innovation.

Kim Seok-pil, Acting Mayor and Vice Mayor of Cheonan, emphasized the significance of the project. "This initiative is expected to greatly strengthen the region's technological foundation and contribute significantly to creating a talent development environment, thanks to the synergy with the city's ongoing smart city development," he stated. "By building an AI innovation ecosystem that brings together local government, universities, and businesses, we will transform Cheonan into a digital city leading in AI." This integrated approach signifies a long-term commitment to nurturing a vibrant AI ecosystem within the city, making it a hub for research, development, and application of AI technologies.
