Paraguay's Electric Vehicle Market Records 2.4% Share in 2024, Showing Growth

The Hidden Gem of South America, Paraguay, Actively Transitioning to Electric Vehicles

Paraguay, often considered one of South America's most enigmatic countries, is drawing attention for its remarkable growth in the electric vehicle (EV) market. According to recently released official data, electric vehicle sales in Paraguay accounted for 2.4% of total car sales in 2024, a significant increase from the 1.4% recorded in the previous year.

A Colombian historian, deeply impressed by Paraguay's unique and eventful history, expressed surprise at the fact that even in this veiled nation, the transition to electric vehicles is beginning in earnest. He recalled that Paraguay was the first nation in South America to achieve stability after independence but remained isolated from the outside world for a long time under the dictatorial rule of Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia from 1816.

In particular, the 'War of the Triple Alliance' from 1864 to 1870 is recorded as the most tragic event in Paraguayan history. Paraguay, fighting against the Triple Alliance of Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay, suffered devastating losses, with up to 90% of its male population perishing, yet it continued its tenacious resistance. This historical background is considered to have influenced the strong national identity that Paraguay maintains to this day.

In the 20th century, Paraguay once again demonstrated its strength by winning the 'Chaco War' against Bolivia. The fact that it remains the only South American country where the majority of the population speaks its native language, Guarani, and that most of its capital city is not publicly available on Google Street View, further contributes to Paraguay's enigmatic image.

The news of the growing electric vehicle market in Paraguay, a country not well-known to the outside world, is a very interesting development. Although still in its early stages, the 1 percentage point increase in EV sales share from 2023 to 2024 indicates a growing interest in eco-friendly future mobility within Paraguayan society.

The historian commented, "While I hope to learn more deeply about Paraguay's fascinating history someday, our main focus today is electric vehicles, and I am very pleased to confirm that the transition to EVs is clearly taking place even in this mysterious land."

Paraguay's electric vehicle market growth is expected to accelerate further in line with the overall trend of eco-friendly energy transition in the South American region. Attention will be focused on the policy support and market changes through which Paraguay will usher in the electric vehicle era.
