GYEONGJU, South Korea - The city of Gyeongju is gearing up to host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit this October with an ambitious goal: to create a "language barrier-free" environment for all attendees. This initiative, spearheaded by Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, will deploy a comprehensive, AI-driven translation system capable of supporting all 21 member economies' languages.

To facilitate seamless communication, two-way, AI-based translation devices will be installed at key locations, including the 12 accommodation venues for heads of state, Gimhae Airport, Gyeongju Station, and the Gyeongju Bus Terminal. Additionally, general participants will receive real-time, one-on-one translation devices. To ensure consistent service across the board, general participant hotels will be grouped into "zones," with a central desk and dedicated translation staff offering the same high-level service as the head-of-state accommodations.

Beyond the conference venues, the city is extending its efforts to daily life. Over 1,000 taxis will be equipped with an AI translation platform. This system allows passengers to access a QR code inside the vehicle, record their message in their native language, and have it automatically translated and played for the driver. Drivers can respond using the same method. A successful trial run of this system during the first Senior Officials' Meeting (SOM1) in Gyeongju, which supported 25 languages, received very positive feedback.

For dining, 150 local restaurants will be designated as "World Restaurants," selected based on hygiene, friendliness, and convenience for foreign visitors. These establishments will be outfitted with essential tools like outdoor price displays, QR code menus, multilingual smart menus, and two-way translation devices. Staff will also receive customer service training tailored to international guests.

In a modern twist, a digital APEC Summit guide will be provided in the form of a high-quality, business-card-sized "Welcome Card" with a QR code. Scanning the code will provide access to essential information in both English and Korean, including meeting schedules, lodging, dining, transportation, and tourism. The platform will also offer convenient booking and payment options for tourist attractions, KTX train tickets, city tours, and car rentals.

These multifaceted efforts, from advanced translation technology to dedicated human support, reflect Gyeongju's commitment to ensuring a welcoming and efficient experience for all APEC delegates and visitors, fostering a truly global and inclusive event.
