In a landmark case highlighting the dark side of online fame, YouTuber Lee Jun-hee, known online as "Koo Jyeok," has been sentenced to three years in prison for extorting money from popular mukbang YouTuber Park Jeong-won, better known as "Tzuyang." The Suwon District Court also handed down a two-year prison sentence to a lawyer, Choi, who provided Tzuyang's personal information to Koo Jyeok, enabling the extortion scheme.
Koo Jyeok, along with an accomplice, Jeon Guk-jin, known as "Joo Jak-gamyeolsa," was found guilty of threatening to expose alleged private information about Tzuyang unless she paid them 55 million won. The court's decision emphasizes the severity of cyber extortion and the exploitation of personal information for financial gain.
The case also sheds light on the phenomenon of "cyber wreckers," YouTubers who capitalize on celebrity scandals by creating sensational content. Koo Jyeok's actions exemplify this trend, as he attempted to leverage Tzuyang's reputation for his own benefit.
In addition to the prison sentences for Koo Jyeok and Choi, the court also handed down suspended sentences and community service orders to other individuals involved in the case, underscoring the broader implications of online harassment and extortion.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of online threats and the importance of protecting personal information in the digital age.
